How to fix move animation on chess.com computer website

Whenever the computer is making a move, or I'm clicking on a square for my pieces to move, the animation of the pieces on my computer is super "laggy," which for me is almost unbearable. Although, I don't think its actually a lag problem, since for the most part the rest of the website is fast–it's purely the animation that appears laggy.

It’s a common issue. Refresh the page, that usually works for me.

Also make sure to check your piece animation settings

Unfortunately, I don't think refreshing worked for me. Also, can you elaborate on the piece animation settings?

Animation settings allow you to make your pieces move faster, slower, or with extra effects. It should be in the settings icon on the top right of the board.

Let me know if you got this fixed. I have the same issue when wishing to use arcade mode on google chrome. It's super laggy compared to microsoft edge. It's not a matter of selecting the animation settings to faster or slower because we have "Arcade" mode selected. For some reason it's only extremely slow with those 2 in particular. I have cleared my cache, restarted my computer, and cleaned my tabs. This has been an issue ever since I started months ago. Any help would be amazing! Thanks.

The client side resources will have a large impact on how well Arcade animation works. You might check the Chrome hardware acceleration setting and change it to see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately already tried that one with no success.

Guys, during a rapid rated game, the piece movement animation is smooth and normal for me. However, after the game, when I start reviewing or analyzing the match, clicking on any move causes the pieces to teleport instantly instead of moving smoothly across the board.

I want the same smooth animation in post-game review—where the pieces visually move from one square to another, not jump abruptly. I’ve already tried adjusting all the available animation and board settings, but nothing seems to fix this.

What’s confusing is that when I watch GothamChess’s videos, his post-game analysis and reviews clearly show smooth piece animations, just like during live play.

So my questions are:

  • Is there any way to enable smooth animations during post-game review?

  • Is this behaviour limited by subscription level (Diamond vs Platinum), or is it the same for everyone?. As I am a Platinum member?.

Any clarity on this would be really helpful. Thanks!

The same code is used for both boards.

That said, the site recently changed how animations were done, which can be impacted by OS settings. That was just temporarily rolled back, so the old code is running again.

I had this "slowing down/laggy animation" problem first time ever and I fixed it by turning off Hardware Acceleration on Firefox. I think it went automatically on by itself after recent browser update.
