Can anyone please give any suggestions?

Play more  and more games to gain the speed and learn Openings like KIA or certain move that you can use against any opening or at least for most of them

Thanks!

I've played around 500 bullet games, but I don't really play VERY fast, so that I won't risk losing a piece.

Lol. Or a better mouse? :P

Seriously, how to "think" better in bullet then?

just use the time in your advantage....eg close the position and play some little moves togain time advantage over your opponent while he tries to crack your defence ...then maybe open up the position and attack to win on time or mate....and if you lose by a rook or a knight in bullet games you should keep fighting because you can stillwin on time or your oppenent make a wrong move on time...

Actually, this question has a simple answer: to get better at speed chess, first get better at chess! If you play slow games and work hard at learning to count, calculate, and make good decisions, all this will make you a much better speed player too.

Totally agree

Thanks! I slowly am playing more and more standard games these days.

Very Easy Answer --

  • Add a 5 or 10 second bonus to whatever speed(s) you play.
  • PRACTICE, and STUDY, all phases of the game, (but especially endgames).

Game in 3/5 up to Game in 30/10 will give you all the practice you need.

Instead of Game in @5 hours, you should (perhaps) STUDY chess instead.

Don't be surprised if you Blitz strength is 200-300 points weaker than you OTB strength.

It depends on age too.  Your reflexes slow down, later in life.

i think the best way to get better at faster time controls is to play a lot of slow games. this will give you a database of knowledge of tactics and positional play that will help you play better at blitz and bullet. i rarely play bullet but when i do i play phenomenally. this is because i mostly play 5 mins. also, some days i decide that for weeks i will only play 15mins. when i get back to blitz i am able to implement a lot of cool ideas.

Avatar of ProfBlunderer

15m is also too fast, to play real chess you must play at least with 60m

But usually what goes wrong for me is that I am low on time, even if I am ahead in material.

To play better at speed chess you need:

(1) a good mouse

(2) a good internet connection

(3) a good grasp of chess tactics and positions

(1) and (2) are easy

What about for thinking well in speed chess?

Anyone else?

Sounds like an oxymoron

The answer is in post #12.  Read and take to heart.

Have a nice day, too.

Thinking well in speed chess can be solved the same way as thinking well in slow chess. In fact, they're about the same.

The second piece of advice is just to practice. If you have a goal of a certain rating at 3-minute chess, you may want to practice at 1-minute chess. After 1-minute chess, 3-minute chess feels like a lifetime!
