If you don't understand them, perhaps it's time to understand them, at least study some master games played in those openings, preferably annotated. Those structures will pop up no matter what openings you play.
There is also no way for white or black to force a closed position, of course, since it requires the other side to not take their pawns. However, the King's Indian Structure after d4, or perhaps the Colle/London Systems are rather solid in the center, which is perhaps something you can use.
