How to go from 1800+ to 2200+

Hi guys. My blitz rating here is in the 1800-1900 range now. I am planning to cross 2200 in a period of one year from now. I play around 20-25 blitz games here per day, sometimes more. I do analysis of the games which I lose. I study openings and end games daily. I participate in 2-3 OTB tournaments per month. I am devoting full time for chess and I don't do anything else. I have taken up chess as a career. Is one year a realistic time frame to achieve 2200+ here? How to go about it? Am I going in the right direction? Please help me out in making a plan of action. P.S. My FIDE rating in classical is 1363 and I am working on that too and plan to go above 1600 in one year.

Just because your rating is higher you can still learm from books. I will recomend. How to reasese your chess, by jerry silman, a great book for experinced players. also get the 4th addtion. I will help you with most imbalances your probably over look.

your fide rating is 1363 but your online ratings are that high? your fide rating should be much much higher than that, you must already be of a skill level of 1700 fide minimum for the level of skill for your online ratings

My FIDE rating is low because I played less tournaments . Got official rating only one year ago. My peak rating was 1430. Recently I have started playing more after completing education.

I have read some part of that book. Will read it. Thanks :) . I am currently focussing on end games study more.

400 points in 1 year is pretty rare at 1800. If you've been improving a few 100 points every year the last few years, then maybe it's possible.

That sounds reasonable.

Maybe cut back on the blitz, and instead of that solve tactic puzzles.

Also instead of playing blitz whenever there is a top tournament go over some (or all) of those games. Also look at historical games from the openings you like to play. An easy list of current and upcoming professional tournaments is here https://2700chess.com/

And of course http://www.chessgames.com/ you can look up games from long ago.

Blitz is speeding up all the stuff you already know. It doesn't help improve your chess ability. You can even quit playing blitz completely, then after you get better at chess in general, start playing blitz again. I'm not saying you have to quit... blitz is fun and can give you experience in your openings quickly, but it's not a key activity.

Mostly improvement is about taking a difficult position (from a game, puzzle, or whatever) then spending some time analyzing it as best you can on your own, then comparing your analysis to what the author or player or engine says.

Play more OTB and less online. Analyze your decision making when your OTB game is over. Read "Applying Logic in Chess" by Kislik to learn how to use meta strategies to improve your results over a period of time.

Thanks @Preggo_Basashi ! I will play less, study more from now. So far I have improved my game mainly by playing . I don't miss any opportunity to play. Whenever I get even 5 minutes free, I play a blitz or bullet game and then get back to work. I am addicted to online chess but now I realised I need to change that to make fast progress. I follow all the top level tournaments regularly. I can understand the moves of top players but can't emulate those moves myself on the board. For that I need to understand how those guys think. Entire thinking process needs to be changed or rather improved. I can calculate 7-8 moves deep but not more than 10 moves at a time. Blitz will not help increase calculation power I know.

Are you talking about 2200 on chess.com or 2200 FIDE?

2200 chess.com first then I will think about FIDE.

pdve

2200 FIDE is really hard to achieve

pdve

but if you can get that rating then you will not have a problem becoming a professional.

no

ok

Well I know several people where I live who are professionals at even 1800 FIDE. They teach kids and are poor but they get by.

pdve

And my coach is roughly 2000 FIDE he has a wife and kids and earns enough to even drink booze.

pdve

And we all know that booze is the life line of a true chess player.happy.png

Sorry. Just kidding. @BobbyPhisher960,

2200 FIDE is a worthy goal to aspire to. Of course 2400 is even better but I can't personally imagine ever reaching that milestone.

I know a IM where I live who charges 30000to coach his students for a year. That's a really big sum of money for a single student. Not everyone can charge that much so your point is true to an extent.

What matters in the end is how much you enjoy the game. If you are not terribly gifted you will have to make sacrifices.

ponz111

You do not need a coach to go from 1800 to 2200.

pdve

Fischer could become world champion without hiring a coach. Doesn't mean everyone can do it.

pdve

Coach is useful.
