How to Improve Chess Rating from 1400 to 1600

@staples13, I agreed bro.

You have 1600 in bullet. If you would like to increase your bullet, you bettter play a lot of bullets as well.

I played 20,000 bullets and mine is 2000. grin.png

I disagree with all the people saying that you have to placlong time controls to improve. I made it to 2000 based almost solely on playing a ton of blitz games

For the blitz games you lose, do you go back and review what mistakes were made/think about what to change? Or do you keep playing more blitz and the same mistakes naturally aren't made again?

Or is it some other technique entirely to identify and fix errors?

I keep playing blitz. I don’t need to analyze the games after the fact. It’s usually pretty obvious exactly where I went wrong. Just keep playing and you’ll continue to improve

Based on your rating graph (which is pretty suspicious) I wouldn't be surprised to see you go back to 1300 if you started playing blitz regularly...

I mean, maybe it wouldn't happen, I'm just saying it wouldn't be a surprise.

How does a blitz player improves at chess? By stop playing blitz and starting to study & analyze.

No that is completely false. A blitz player improves by continuing to play blitz chess. This is much more efficient than playing longer time controls or studying

It's fine to be a dumbass troll in your Sicilian topic, but giving bad advice to players who want to improve isn't funny, it's just mean.

Yes notmtwain, You see that my blitz rating is 2000 while yours is less than 1500, so I think I’m more qualified to give advice on how to improve at blitz chess.

I think your blitz rating will soon be back to 1200 where it belongs unless you just stop playing.

Oh, looks like @notmtwain beat me to it.

Stiggling.

My blitz graph goes up and down because I used to be a major sandbagger. Everyone in the forums already knows this. That’s why I have hundreds probably well over a thousand blitz games where I’ve resigned at move 1.

No one is trolling. I got to 2000 almost solely by playing a bunch of blitz. I got better by sheer number of games played not by analysis or longer time controls. So yes in my experience playing a lot of blitz absolutely is the best way to increase your blitz rating.

Whats unfortuante is that there are many players in this thread who’ve never even obtained the 1600 rating  the OP is trying to get who are giving him advice on how to do it.

All I’ve done is tell him what worked for me

Here comes the part that shocks people....

Quit playing blitz, and bullet.  How do you expect to improve when you're moving fast?

IF you decide to get serious abut improving,  Then your improvement will come from tactics...tactics...tactics...and playing long time controls.

I agree with you that you have to play a lot of blitz and bullet to be good at blitz and bullet, but that's not even telling half the story.

Speed chess only gives you time to use the knowledge and patterns you have in long term memory. So first you have to actually learn those things (by studying and playing long games) after that, yes, you have to play a lot of blitz (or bullet) to get used to using them quickly (and gaining blitz/bullet specific skills like when and how to premove).

I'm willing to play staples, or you, or anyone. At least 10 games. Rated or unrated, whatever time control you want (but I like 3 and 1 minute games).

Oh yeah, I forgot about your sandbagging.

Anyway, people who never play blitz are going to be bad at it.

I mean, lets imagine Hikaru vs Caruana in blitz and bullet... I think we all know Hikaru would win with a huge plus score.

I've played 1000s of blitz and bullet games too, and I agree that's important to raise your speed chess to the highest rating you can.

BUT that's only after you've actually learned stuff. maybe the OP can go from 1400 to 1600 by learning how to play fast and premove tricks, but OP can't go from 1400 to 2000 that way.

And a lot of people who say they never studied still do... for example do you watch any youtube videos? Do you follow any super tournaments and listen to commentary? Do you use an opening explorer / database to look up opening moves? etc.

Some people really don't study at all. I think the person with the most blitz games on chess.com (over 100,000 games) has been the same rating for years (and it's far under 2000, more like 1300 IIRC).

tipish

the question here is from 1400 to 1600? ok. from my experience until your not 1600 don't touch a book just play and keep on playing. 10 minute blitz is slow enough. just analyze every game and continue playing. will give you 1600 in 1 year from 1400. now from 1600 in up I don't know. hope will find out soon enough.

Keep working more and more on your tactics and you will easily get to 1400. Also learn the basic stuff in endgame.

Thanks...

I got to 1400 by doing TONS of tactics, improving my endgame theory, and thinking more about which openings suited me. GOOD LUCK. wink.png

Also, play games against people rated around 150 points higher than you. If you get depressed about the number of games you are playing, play Computer 1 until you feel better. tongue.png

Watch youtube videos and read chess books to improve your tactics.

Having been stuck at 1400 for a year and moving onto 1600 in a short amount of time, I would go out on a limb and say videos or books are a waste of time for the interim.

I can teach you EXACTLY how to think during the game (opening, middlegame and endgame). Your chess understanding will never be the same and you will improve a lot. I charge €35/h (if you can't afford it, we can negotiate the price). If you can’t afford too many lessons, don’t worry. I can teach you a lot in an hour. Here to help if you are interested.

If you want to study by yourself, read ‘Logical Chess’. It is really instructive book. You have it on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eTB7oHeRgM&list=PLUrgfsyInqNa1S4i8DsGJwzx1Uhn2AqlT
