There's a saying, I don't know from where.

Nothing can stop an idea whose time has come.

When the time comes, something will be popular. Like chess. In the age of Internet and computers, chess is King.

Move over Poker, Mahjong, etc . . .

My guess is ballet will be more popular, if it has not already been.

If you say something conversational then I guess you can be “popular”. Ex: Go to *Bleep* *insert name here*

That works for a short time.

People will learn to turn off the noise.

Say something true, and it will last forever.

I have had many popular chess.com topics over the years. There are a lot of tips I could offer based on what the topic is about (for example a serious forum thread on analyzing a certain chess position will look very different than advice on a forum game in an off-topic forum).

However, one piece of advice I'll offer can apply to all topics...give it some real thought and post it in a fairly professional manner. If you want people to take your topic seriously, then you have to present it seriously. If you don't even bother to do a spelling/grammar check (or you want analysis, but don't annotate your own thoughts first and just expect everyone to analyze and do the work for you), then don't be surprised when trolls show up and people make jokes and don't take your thread seriously.

You don't need to be a New York Times best selling author, but at least try to make your post presentable and you are more likely to get more posts.

Be controversial, make it easy for people to share dumb opinions because they're less dumb than the guy that went before, and bingo! You have a populated chat.

Of course, popularity is a tertiary measure on quality, but that's what you asked - how to be a fool and attract attention, no?

Sorry not sorry.
