How to orient in crowded positions

So I notice I often play my worst chess right after the opening. For example, here I played (white to move) the lame h3. Does anybody have tips how to think methodologically in this kind of positions? Do you make some kind of mental notes of how many attackers and defenders each piece has? Sometimes I don't know which side is actually better after a string of calculation. Perhaps I should search for this kind of positions and play them out against the computer.
