How to reach 1600 in the most effective way?

I have around 900 points and I dont know how to improve anymore. What are the ways to improve to reach, as I said in the title, reach 1600? (<high priority)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have some other questions:  (low priority)

1-I saw some videos and foruns of opennings. I can usually use and memorize them, but i really dont know what to do next (after I get the "advantage"). So, what do I need to do after the opening?

2-How can I win against someone if the person can see what Im doing?

3-Is chess only thinking ahead the opponent?

Play and then analyze with your opponent and a stronger player.

Answers to your three questions:

1) Play chess

2) Rematch

3) No

Having gained around 600 points in one year (uscf) I feel qualified to answer this question :P

If you want to get better, here are the list of priorities

1. basic opening principles: develop before attacking, don't hinder your own pieces development etc. Don't try to memorize openings, it's completely pointless. When I was 1100 I was all excited about "learning" (aka rote memorizing) the sicilian...that was a complete waste of time :P Learn something like the French or caro-kan and learn the strategies.

2. tactics: use chess.com or various tactic trainers and practice tactics for at least 5 to maybe 10 min. a day.

3. learn about imbalances, and most importantly, how to recognize, create, and attack weaknesses (this is a more advanced topic).

Most importantly:

The number one factor that made me jump from 1200 to 1400 in a matter of weeks (during which I played many tournament length games), is 1. don't make one move threats that end with your pieces in bad positions, that's called hope chess. 2. consider every move of the opponent, at least for a few seconds. Especially at your level, you'll need games up to at least 45 min. to fully do that. Many of the moves higher level players make are tactically motivated. The majority of my losses nowawadays are coming from a lack of tactical foresight combined with not anticipating my opponents moves.

If you're wondering specifically how to know what to do after the opening, to reiterate, you need to look into imbalances, pawn breaks (usually specific to an opening), and weaknesses along with attacking them.

Feel free to add me as a friend and you can hit me up for a game or two :)

Check my new blog...I am doing a series on how to reach 2000 (three parts so far)!

The biggest thing is to practice tactics.  Chesstempo is a great website for this.  You have unlimited time to solve.

Always play much lower rated players than yourself to try to keep gaining points steadily up to 1600!      Tongue Out

There are 10 things you'll need to study to reach 1600 from your current level:

1. Tactics

2. Endgames (I recommend the first 4 chapters of Silman's Complete Endgame Course)

3. Tactics

4. Basic opening principles (not specific moves - see Rubydave2's advice, above)

5. Tactics

6. Tactics

7. Tactics

8. Tactics

9. Tactics

10. Tactics

And if you have time, try to find some time for tactics study, too.

Of course, this is assuming you're playing slow games regularly and analyzing them afterward to see what you did wrong, preferably with the help of stronger players.

Also, did I mention that it's worth doing some tactics study?

thanks all with the help

I am not a authority on the subject but I have asked this question and the answer I believe is get a chess tactics book and a engame study book and study them carefully. I would NOT play blitz or bullet but one or two hour games. This should bring you up to 1600. I have a similar goal so I am working on it too. If you want I will play you a game and try to point out where you could improve. I think I am around 1400 so I could at least help you some. If you want t otake me up on the offer challenge me to a online chess game in two weeks ( I am going on vacation next week.)
