How to stop logon/logoff notifications? (SOLVED)?

Doesd anyone know how to stop the names of friends popping up on board everytime they login or log out?   It gets so bad I can't even see the resign button or draw button because the rught hand side of screen is covered with the names of people and the long grey bar that goes across it.
