How to study master games??
pay attention to thier middlegame plans. One of the best things to learn from master games is 1) how they come up with a plan of proceeding after the opening. 2) how they avoid tactics by positioning their pieces. 3) how much masters value pawns. 4) how they change from a middlegame to an end game.
2020, thanks for the advice. I have seen some of his videos. he makes good points. I think it can also be said that 99% of chess is avoiding tactics that your opponent is trying to use against you. if I remember right, Karpov, Petrosian, and Bottvinik made a pretty good living doing that.
As you go through the games, annotate them with your own thoughts and analysis. Write down your questions, ideas and evaluations of positions. Compare your analysis to the annotations provided in books or databases to learn from experts' insights.
@ChessMasteryOfficial ,So I have to kind of analyse their games with my thoughts And then when I have done the analysis,I can check my analysis with the engine? Because I have to learn from these games so that I can apply these things to my opponents and beat them.
Thank you for your advice.Your advice was very nice but please answer this question: analyse their games with my thoughts And then when I have done the analysis,I can check my analysis with the engine? Is this what I have to do?? And how do I learn from those games, should I write them down? On a notebook specifically for chess?
You don't need to use an engine for this. Just a chess set and a good book with annotated master games. I like to cover the moves with a piece of paper, and try to analyse and guess the next move from each player. Compare you own thoughts with the actual moves and the annotations. In this way you will learn.
If something remains a deep mystery (eg why couldn't Black just take on b2?) then you can use an engine, but the notes should explain what you are not expected to figure out yourself.
These days I am re-reading Tarrash's book on St. Petersburg 1914 in this way.
