Teach them first how the pieces move/capture. Them ask them to solve capture problems. Knight capture problems are enjoyable. An example of knight problem is, they can capture a  pawn with their knight within 3 moves.

Then teach them how the game is won by checkmate. Teach them about castling, and the importance of castling.

Tell them the value of pieces like Rook is stronger than Knight/Bishop.

Most people enjoy solving mate problems. So show them first simple easy mate positions. Then after that ask them to solve easy mate problems. Show them tactical motif like pin, fork, double attack etc.

You must have plenty of tactical resources. So I suggest you get books like this http://www.amazon.com/Tactics-Chess-Games-Everyday-Players-ebook/dp/B009TBYA7U

I taught them the rules and then we would start playing. If they made mistakes I'd explain them. I believe this simple method still works

I just started teaching chess to my young nephew. Usually, we start with:

1. The position at the beginning
2. Move for each piece
3. How to capture; and finally
4. How to checkmate.

For each step above, we played some moves just to let him internalize the purpose of those. Since he is still a 6-year old kid, I always allowed him to change his moves or showed him a possible capture so he can't loss his interest on the game.

This is just a simple system I am following and I think this is applicable only to those who have no knowledge of chess at all. I am surprised that he already memorized the moves in 2 days and he can see captures on his own.

Playing with him, I can also assess how effective my teaching method is. For the moment, I never teaching him techniques so he can't mix all those ideas in his head and he can focus only on one area at a time.
