How to be a more aggressive player?

Maybe we can give a bit more concrete advice if you tell us why you think your play needs more agression ?

Do you feel you're playing too positional and leaving out tactical opportunities or is it more a mental thing and you are feeling too timid ?

Can you show us some games or positions where you felt that you could have performed better with more agression ?

Just play gambits whenever possible (danish,Latvian ,Kings)and throw pieces at your oppenents king early.

Accost a girl for her name, and then if she gives it to you, throw her up against the wall and start kissing her. Remember, name=consent.

Well, I guess I've just been told that by my chess coach. I mean, I can be winning a game, but he says I'm a little more timid than I should be.

For instance I'm super careful when attacking, and I check and recheck every possible attack, which is good I guess, but I just want to be a little less timid and more pushy. Maybe assertive is a better word.

Better check your sources on that.

In that case try training with a tactics trainer like the one chess.com offers.

It will train you to recognize and find tactical opportunities faster and will make you more confident when attacking.

I'll do that! Thanks asknotaxe.

Punch your opponent in the face if he has one... it's a very natural agressive act in chess.

What kind of act is that?

An agressive one...

Jelly is a girl; so setting the stupidity of your statement aside, it's irrelevant.

For chess tournaments and such; can you train for this or anything?

Work heavily on your tactics and find a gambit that you like.

Talfan1

you can teach aggressive chess  but i reckon its best when its part of your psyche

dont spend 40 moves defending if 5 bold moves seals the point get stuck in grab a knight put it in your opponents half tie a kamikazi headband on it and tear open the gate

set up the combos that work (q n b battery ,rook bish ,etc .)

you feel that taste in your gut when you lose ,thats the stuff that starts the fire

Rogue_King

Simple anytime you see a move that could complicate things, you have no idea if its great/good/bad, and you really dont want to lose, play that move. Also get real good positionally, if you aren't good with positional chess being aggressive is just a good way to speed up a loss.

_Jellyfish_

@Rogue_King: Yeah, I'm not sure aggressive was the best word to use. I think I said assertive a few posts up.

Anyhow, I get what you're saying. If I just attack and attack I could get slapped with a killing loss. So just basically not be afraid to push my oponent around more. That's kind of what I was going for.
