Sorry for the necro but you can do “pawns promote on second rank” to turn all pawns into those special units.

When I go to Play>Variants>Custom, I see an option to choose what the pawn is promoted to, and I see all of these unique units that I've never heard of like Archbishops and Bricks and they all seem really cool, is there any way I can place these units on a custom chess board instead of having to promote pawns?
