I'm pretty sure some IM or GM once said it's bogus that they can calculate ~10-20 moves ahead. The closest possible explanation to this exaggeration is that masters calculate several possible variations of 4-5 moves ahead. For example, they see 4 possible variations with 5 moves in each, so you could assume, that he sees 4x5=20 moves ahead. Also, as far as I know, it's not about precise 'calculations', but more about the feel of a position: they 'feel' whether a move leads to a favourable position or not. But what do I know? ;D Or you, JG27Pyth? We're not masters.
Anyway, unless the moves are forced or 'semi-forced', I usually try to look 3 moves ahead, because anything beyond that is too much for me to handle.
