Chess used to be about beating my opponents and competition. Then it became about something I needed in my life to activate a part of my mind I couldn't activate anyway else. Then it turned into a love of attacking and complications, making fun games. Lastly it became a discussion between me and my opponent, an exchange of ideas, a creation of art and logic.
How you guys keep yourself Motivated?
Motivation????
Chess should be played only by its LOVERS... Do only what you love... Don't play chess to prove something..
Do you need motivation to eat good food????
I can write a very long truthful post which will be bitter as most truths are but I think what I have said above says it all for the precieving mind. But you can keep searching for "secrets" and there are no "secrets".

Great thread this!
(1) I figured out why I play chess
(2) got totally turned off greasy takeaways
(3) Stay tuned.

In my opinion it is everyone who plays chess knowing unknowingly ... in every aspect of life ... chess also follows the same principle of BOOLEAN thoughts ... should I go for it or not, will i be captured or not, does he get an edge over this or not ... and many more similar boolean questions arise ... this really helps in real life while making any kind of decision ... so practically everyone who plays chess and understands this small little facts gets self motivated as long as they realize it ... others just play it to be as a mind boggling game to spend time ... some consider it a hopeless game ... but people like me and us all here in this forum are some kind of chess geeks ... we initially played it for fun in most of the cases ... but now practically implementing the light and dark squares in real life we feel the importance of it ... it opens up ur thinking process ... it broadens ur mind for the narrowest possibilities ...
This, from X-Files, sums up the consummate chess aficionado:
MAURICE: You kindly think of yourself as single-minded but you're prone to obsessive compulsiveness workaholism, antisocialism... Fertile fields for the descent into total wacko breakdown.
MAURICE: You've probably convinced yourself you've seen aliens. You know why you think you see the things you do?
MULDER: Because I have seen them?
MAURICE: 'Cause you're a lonely man. A lonely man chasing paramasturbatory illusions that you believe will give your life meaning and significance and which your pathetic social maladjustment makes impossible for you to find elsewhere. You probably consider yourself passionate, serious, misunderstood. Am I right?
MULDER: "Paramasturbatory"?
MAURICE: Most people would rather stick their fingers in a wall socket than spend a minute with you.
