When I discovered this site it took some getting used to the 2-D. Now I play so much more on this site than OTB it takes getting used to 3-D. Chess, after all, is a 2-D game.
how you view chess

I've hardly ever played OTB my whole life... when I do play, I find I'm still pretty good but I miss the analysis board :). It depends largely on the opening... if I get a line I know, I'll likely play just as well OTB as in CC ... if not, I don't perform as well ... likely because of the analysis board and the databse.

Have chess.com ever considered implementing a high graphics board with 3D pieces (obviously optional) like they have in msn chess?
If not, why? .)

im guessing it would slow down the site if all games are played in 3D. Although that would be pretty intersting if we had that option.

I don't think it'd slow down the site at all. There wouldn't be more data sent during the game no matter the graphics. It'd be hard to implement it on a site like this though and it'd take time. I'd rather the staff add some other features or work a bit more on the vote chess system instead.

A 3D board would have to be pretty darn good, in my opinion. I've played (tried to play) on a lot of virtual 3D boards over the years, and the the ones in Chessmaster 10+ are the only ones I've used that I consider playable.
As an aside, I play practice games against the Palm OS version of Hiarcs quite a bit, and when I'm at home, I always play the game on a real chessboard, just to keep my eyes sharp in the 3rd dimension.

I have a friend whose sole reason for not joining the site was that ther's no 3D option,it could be a very attractive feature.
It all depends on how good you want the 3D option to be. You can have pre-rendered 3D images, which are as costly as any 2D image and resize the pieces to fit on the certain piece of the board.
However, you most likely want a rotatable 3D board and pieces, which would be VERY costly to do as a web application, especially if you want texture and pieces without bad shapes. Look at 3D video game graphics from the 32- and 64-bit eras of consoles. These machines were built to spit out graphics to one single output. Don't expect the same thing from a web application that has to serve to hundreds of people at once.

3d would be a nightmare to do.... really. and it wouldn't be true 3d. it would be a single view of a 3d board. but those are SO much harder to play on. i would argue that anyone who prefers a 3d board just doesn't play online chess that much. am i wrong?

I prefer 2D to 3D on computer chess. If you want a 3D board that reflects real OTB play, use an actual board to play the moves on. If your playing many games and can't be bothered to set it up everytime, get used to playing it in 2D. Your less likely to miss an important piece or pawn if you look from above. The only way to get totally used to OTB conditions is to play in more OTB tournaments, so join a club or play more with a friend.

Chess, after all, is a 2-D game.
Chess is not a 2D game, it is a 3D game.
Also I never play chess looking at a screen. Thats not good for your eyes. I play on a real board aside. Even when I play against somebody online in real-time, I use the computer only to make my moves and see what moves my opponent make. Everyone should do that. Finally, I find it funny that people put so much energy trying to have a 3 dimensionnal board on a computer screen.. I mean.. if you want so much to recreate the real life on the screen, why dont you use the real board ! Real life IS in 3 dimension, plus it does not look "flat" like on a screen. :)

It's nice to be back here after a year absence! I started to have that problem when I first started using software. I'm 47 years old so I learned to play face to face. However, as software improved, I started using it because my work requires me traveling a lot and face to face play is mostly impossible. I ended up loosing some of my game when I went back to face to face playing. Now I keep a board next to the computer to eliminate the problem. I still prefer face to face play because of the ritual of human interaction (even though "ritual of human interaction" sounds a bit mechanical in tone).
Has anyone noticed that playing 2 dimensional chess on programs such as chess.com, fritz, etc. affected their ability to "see" patterns and moves on a real chess board? I know that some programs allow you to see in "3-D" but it is still different.
