Study a lot, etc.
How'd you great chess players get so great?

I wouldn't consider myself great, but I actually analyzed mine and others' games and learned from the mistakes, and learned how to apply myself and apply what I've studied to my games.

You have to misspend your youth focusing on 64 squares and 32 pieces of wood/plastic. Repeat above for the rest of your miserable existence. Then you'll be happy.

of course MOST people wanting to do this vow not NOT be happy until there are At least a NM; and therfore after a week of misspending their youth- their decide to waste their youth doing some other idle (yet more enjoyable) hobby.
so. first thought. "be happy". if you can't be happy when your playing chess- there's no hope.

Beats me...the word "great" in no way describes my chess. Now if you want to know how to become fantastically average then let me know.

Oh yeah? My lacklusterness will make your mediocrity look completely uninspiring!

It is, plus one endgame book.
Even if it's Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual it isn't enough. Theoretical endgames (and strategic endgames too) are so rich and varied that to truly have a firm grasp of them one needs specialized books, such as Secrets of Pawn Endings or better yet, the ECE volumes.

Big Whoop! My complete lack of anything even remotely resembling chess, will make your lacklusterness look dull....or something like that.

400 Chess books and 2400 Over the Board chess games along with probably a few thousand blitz games divided between over the board and online.
Oh, and note that the order listed is the order of frequency, starting with the most time spent! VERY KEY! If you are one that spends 12 hours a day playing blitz online, you are wasting your time. Online Blitz should be a severely limited supplemental item, not your primary source of improvement.
you know, i'd like to see how you guys do it, like 1.e4#, i can't do that, yet you guys sorta can...
