I started at 12, took off 12 years from 1988-2000, and, now at the age of 46, am 2033.  (I do play at a master level, but I work nights and play badly without sleep.)

Started playing as a teenager in High School, around the time that Fischer was making his bid for the world title... it was probably 1971, because I remember the Candidates matches for that cycle.

I played actively (OTB) for less than 20 years, from the early 1970s until the late '80s or early '90s. Rated around 2000 - 2050 Canadian. Won the Atlantic Open in 1973 and the Atlantic Closed in 1981. Drew against Tal in a simul in 1988.

I haven't taken Chess seriously since the late '80s, when I got a job making TV Cartoon shows and pretty well dropped out of the Chess scene. I've been playing a bit of 3 Days/move chess the past few years, but I think it's safe to say that I'm past my peak as a player.

Last year's September. My girlfriend broke up with me, since then I have wasted my life.

So technically, you could be my grand grandparent?
Didndt you lost your mind on the cartoon things? Were you using Adobe After Effects -7.BC?

Morphy was right, knowing how to play chess is the sign of a gentleman, playing good chess is the sign of a wasted life.

Good thing Im a patzer, however I have already wasted plently of life. DANGIT, NOT AGAIN.

I started at roughly the age of 8.  Am now 28 and play about the same.  Maybe 100-200 elo higher now then as a child.  If I had to guess my rl rating would be 1100ish.

DrSpudnik

15 in 1975. I was starting to shoot up through the 1900s when I went to grad school in 1987. Now I'm in the low 1800s.

Good old capitalism, destroying our dreams.

Why didnt you tell your parents to hold you on until you became a GM?

I was 750s on chess.com in July 2011 . In May 2016 . I was 2356 , My highest on chess.com .

But I left chess.com for serious training and without Mouse , I cant play fast enough to reach that 2350 . But If I get a new mouse , I will definitely cross 2350 .

I've been playing chess just with my dad on and off since I was around 8, and been in the chess club at my elementary school a few years. 21 now, and I started playing again exactly a month ago. I definitely had tactic and attention issues. I got down to like low 600's now I'm high 700's. I only play 10 minute blitz games tho, those are the only games that are fun/challenging. Gonna go to 5 minutes when I feel ready happy.png

I met a school mate at age 15 (1987) who was pretty good (he's 2275 FIDE nowadays), he taught me and I played a lot for one year. Then I practically gave it up until 2013, when I contacted him again and joined his club. Still unrated.

I was taught chess in a "smarter students" special class in elementary school, probably around 1983 or so.   I played it off and on since then, a lot in college between classes on yhoo (back when that was a major site) and on the college chess team and uscf local events.   On CDC I am now in the 1700s.   I am probably past my prime, I had more focus and energy 20 years ago.   Ive always had a computer around to play against, the first one had a 1 color display and the chess game was on a cassette tape.

Can someone explain the difference between How long have you been playing and How long you have been playing, please.

I always put "You" in front of "have"... why "have you" is correct.. is not a question inside a question.... should be How long "you have been" playing chess in my eyes. But no wonder. I never took proper english language training lessons.

Anyway... about 3.5 years without counting hundreds of games online back 10 years ago as a teen for a year. Back then i haven't studied chess. Just playing.

So 2013 i started and i played only 1 min bullet and 3 min blitz. Just recently (year ago)  started to play Rapid and more slow chess and to actually study the game.. I and spent huge amount of time, countless hours everyday for whole year watching videos, mostly blitz etc from Ytube channels and lessons. Took all my free time and even above that.

Now at  age 28 i am ~2k rated online bullet/blitz, tactics 2200+ ~1750-1800 rapid.

Thanks to amount spend on chess watching and playing , just now i started to understand openings (my weakness) (practically speaking there are  no openings at bullet and 3 min blitz untill 1800 level at least, thats level you can actually can punish bad opening play.)

Also i scored my first wins against title players even vs an GM. And i played "great" 3 min blitz game against GM Simon Williams just a week ago. Everybody was like wow amazing game dude. I expect to improve more in short period of time.

My short goals are to get 2050 blitz by January, but in 5 min pool or even 5+5 min pool. I find it harder for me, because i am speed player and i want to play more "real" chess than 3 min where i just flag players. After that i will focus exclusively on rapid chess, but can't stop wasting my time on bullet, It's holding me back a lot, but is just in my veins and its what made me play chess at first time.

Realistically speaking i dont love chess, but i love bullet chess.. at the same time it wasted so much time of my crap life anyway ... At least we waste our time on chess and not for example some other video games.

What drives me more to play and gives me hope to improve is the fact so many players are low rated, they have been playing for 5-10 years with like 30 000-50 000 games and still they are at same low level. I don't see losing a lot can be fun.
