I'm playing there too. Good luck to you =)

Eat a good breakfast, I played a game that lasted 4 hours and 30 min last month in a tournament I felt mentally exhausted even though I had a good nights sleep that’s because I didn’t eat breakfast. Without eating before a game you’ll be lucky not to blunder

Another great price of advice l learnt from somewhere is right before your round starts visualize the best game you’ve ever played that’ll put you in a good mood and start your brain up for a chess slugfest. Don’t focus on the result of the game as a track athlete I know how nervous you become before a race or chess game if you stress about things you can’t control i.e game result then you will lose focus of the game. Just focus on playing good chess! Good Luck!

I’m playing there too. My first OTB tournament.

I plan to stay up late learning a new opening rep 50ply deep, then cramming it all again tomorrow morning before round one.
Wish me luck!

your first tournament? the great thing about being unrated is that everyone will underestimate you but use that extra motivation to do better =]

Notice that among the 2000+ rated respondents... myself, Preggo, Mickynj... the opinion is unanimous: use the time to rest and eat well, not to study new lines.

Yes, they are all right.

(When can I become a 2000 plus player!)

By that logic...the 3600 elo engine needs electricity, and not sleep or food.

The advice really is condescending and treat someone like a baby. ...'Get your beauty rest and leave a light on if you want'...or 'Dont shoot your eye out'.

I once played a game [draw] vs a 2400+ player. He wanted to win and kept the game going to past 2 AM. Then I had to drive 1 1/2 hours home and then go to work at 8AM and after a full days work--the trip back to the tournament site in Chicago and I was exhausted from lack of sleep and then

I was paired with a grandmaster! Undecided

[I agree--get lots of sleep before your game]

Good job. How many days is it?

cellomaster8
Thanks. There is a two-day and a three-day option, but you play five games regardless (1-2-2 or 3-2). I am part of the two day option.

Well done! Keep it up.

The only thing you can do that will make a big difference in one night is:

Get plenty of sleep!
