Any time you want to play an unrated game with me, you are welcome to. An unrated game allows you to play for the sake of the game only, without concern for how the outcome will affect your standing. If you like, I could comment on the game and point out anything I notice which seems significant.

That's really great, SK-B. I hope he takes you up on that offer.

I don't mind unrated games either.  As far as studing goes, make a plan and stick to it!  I find myself wanting to change it up sometimes and I used to do just that, but I have found that staying to a plan is much more helpful.

HEY, DONT STOP. I AM 55 YEARS OLD AND A BEGINNER BUT I DID WIN ONE GAME AMONG MY LOSSES. CHESS PEOPLE CAN BE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT IT; BUT I HAVE FUN BEING BEATEN. IVE LEARNED EACH TIME AND I FEEL GREAT JUST TRYING. IT IS A WAY TO STETCH MY MIND. ITS NOT JUST ABOUT WINNING, BUT IF YOU WANT SOMEONE TO BEAT I WILL PLAY YOU AND ENJOY IT.

Why stop playing Chess? Playing will make you better. How would you possibly know if you are improving or not if you not playing chess. Reading chess books and playing will improve  your play. Not just studing from a chess book alone. When starting out learning about playing chess, did you think you were going to win most of your games? Nobody starts out playing chess dominating. You are asking the right questions on what books or software to buy. Besides, you had won 46% of your game that is good since you just learn how to play chess less than 6 months ago.  there is a saying,"Quitter never win and winner never quit,"  so pick up your chin and learn from your loses and become a better CHESS PLAYER!

Hi,

I feel the same, but I am not going to quit no matter how many games I lose!

I joined this site to play chess all I want, to win, to lose, to learn and improve and to have fun, and that is what I am doing!

You win some you lose some!!

It is fun, so stick around! Don't let the losses discourage you.

For Chess software I'd recommend Chessmaster, of course.

Don't use chessmaster, the engine is weak.  Fritz ftw.  Keep playing as well as studying.  Analyze those games after you play them.

The chess engine in Chessmaster is not weak and Fritz is far from the strongest chess program. Fritz didn't even show up at the 2007 computer chess championships.  Chessmaster the best chess playing software for beginning to intermediate players. It plays at Grandmaster level. And, it is unparralleled in its inclusion of multimedia tutorials and other features. Moreover, you can run Chessmaster with other chess engines (I've got Rybka 2.3 working on Chessmaster 10, and Rybka will rape Fritz.) Chessmaster is especially good for beginning chess players because it's easier to understand the post game analysis (it tells you--actually tells you in speech--where you went wrong as opposed to just kicking out reams of cryptic information that has to be read with an even more cryptic database program) and the openings training. With Fritz (and you'll probably need to buy Chessbase as well) there is a much steeper learning curve in order to get anything useful from it's analysis and openings trees etc...

FYI, I own them both as well as Chessbase 9, and I use Chessmaster a lot more than Fritz. I don't even like the interface or insipid chatter of the Fritz program.

To the original poster I would also strongly suggest Chess Mentor. If there is a better chess training program, I'd like to know what it is.

you just have to practice, practice, & practice. that's the way to do it. even if you lose. try again. just have fun & think like you were your opponent. what his he going to do? what piece is he going to move? ask those questions & you are going to be fine. there is always a counterattack for every move. remember, never stop practicing.

you won 53 games, how do you suck??

No don't stop playing ! You can improve and study books of chess in the same time. Try to play some other games especially commented games and also Grand Masters' games. My first book of chess which helped me too much I advise you to have it. The problem I studied it in french and I don't know the english title : " Traité pratique du jeu d'échecs " by Dr S. TARRASCH . Good luck !!!!

Worth a bump for the Bill Wall advice.
