I can't do this alone anymore...

Honestly, it's been getting... kinda boring.

A while ago, I actually managed to disconnect my chess skill (or lack thereof) from my sense of self-worth... and not only does that actually let me enjoy chess more and feel better overall, I also really want it to stay that way! And it will... but that's not the problem.

The problem is, I'd still like to feel like I'm improving, and I'm currently having a bad streak on Lichess. I guess I've been away from chess, so now I'm slower and I lose most (if not all) of my rapid games due to a lack of time to think everything through the way I (probably) should. I don't know what to do, practically speaking. I don't think I'm actually gonna improve forever rating-wise, and even then, the rating itself is just a "bling" that lets me challenge stronger players. THAT's what's boring.

I wanna get off the grid and not care about what others think of my chess... and I especially don't wanna care about what I think of my chess. Maybe this is just about me finding something to get a kick out of. That's all I wanted to share.

I've been buried in the analysis section.  It's its own pastime.

Just forget about rating.

Hmmm, not an unfair point per se. I used to perform deep engine-unassisted opening analyses like that, but now it occurs to me that I just keep missing more and more tactics, and I hate how tactical vision is something that must be trained as a muscle and not just something you learn as info.

just play tactics and have fun playing live chess :) it does not make sense to care too much about a rating that won't change your life (and simply no one else cares if you lose like 5 games in a row even though you may feel like that)

I just lost 100 bullet points a couple of days ago but did anyone notice? 0_o nah (I hope so xD) but seriously rating should not influence your self-worth, there will always be better and worse players than you :)

telling yourself rating means a lot is like fooling yourself, something trash talkers are good at in my opinion :D

It’s quite hard. I always say, before my games, “I will try my best in this game.”

I don’t know why, but I forget about it. I really only use a rating to track improvement.

This genuinely would never have occurred to me! Thanks for the tip!

The "I will try my best" seems like such a good mantra to have for everything in life, and I genuinely mean that! Thank you so much!

As for the rating, of course it's there to keep track of improvement, but that's just it: if you lose enough games, you can easily put yourself in an "I'm only getting worse now" kind of mindset which can actually hurt you. Perhaps you meant to say that you only take your highest ever rating into consideration when tracking your improvement?

When my rating dips as you say, I stop playing for the day. I say, “It’s just a bad day, no worries.”

Sure enough, my rating peaks the next few games I play! Staying positive helps a great deal: in life and in chess. It is just very hard, though.

Just play unrated games for a while. Easy.
