Because most people have others jobs and life outside chess and chess is a hobby. So, they cannot invest lot of time on getting better at chess but they enjoy playing chess as a timepass or destress.

There's no difference between those who have constantly a rating under 1000 and those whose rating is constantly 2000. In any case it is an constantly rating with no up and down after a high number of games.

Where is the tablet where that is carved?

Mannequin

I like playing chess, that's why. I try to win, but don't give a rat's arse if I win or lose. I just like playing.

That is so stupid to say! It would be like GM says ,, I dont know why people under 2000 rating dont quit playing chess''

More importantly is to be interested in the reason why once rating rest in a nearly constant high. Even if you are able to optimize your rating, but some day you reach your point of culmination, and from that moment you play basically like those players whose rating remain below 1000.

standbeeld

I think they start chess.

What's wrong with you?  Some people just LIKE playing.  Who are you to tell them they should stop just because they don't improve?  Just leave them alone and stop being a dick.

I am close to being in the OP test case. Over 600 games blitz, rating under 800; daily about 100 games and rating a little over 900.

Why keep on playing? I like it. Chess is a fun game

Why have I not improved? Just started last October, I have improved a huge amount. I do need to read more and I do have limited time in a day.

Do I care about my rating? Sure, but it is not a measure of who I am and I do not care more for it than a large number of other things in life.

Why have I not improved? Chess is NOT the only thing I do, I do many other hobbies, work, family, etc.

Am I just not smart? I have a terminal degree in my field and am a subspecialist in medicine. I may not be the smartest, but I am hold my own.

My question for the OP would be-do you enjoy chess? How do you when you have no chance of becoming a Magnus? I suspect you enjoy it for the reason that people have been enjoying it for 100s of years-the game is intrinsically fun.

OP I don't understand how people with below-1000 ratings after hundreds of games...just don't quit chess.

Maybe they like playing chess, did that even occur to you?

Skordato

" I don't understand how people with below-1000 ratings after hundreds of games...just don't quit chess."-Its a ridiculous statement-

If everyone did that like everything else there be nothing for anyone to do- most would abandine everything- ski's. tennis, hockey. raaace car driving. musicians, doctors lawyers...well maybe not lawyers but hey---business's...

especially places like this who'd make no money-the top chess players wouldn't either as no one would buy there books and plastic chess sets. I wonder how many tournament style sets Magnus sold over the years?

Jecnez

If you dont study openings, learn tactics, strategies and study end-games it's hard to progress in chess. However, that is not an impediment to enjoy chess.

You can play and enjoy chess regardless of your rating, as you are paired with people around your rating.

M'eh.  Let the guy have his opinion.  I'm sub 1000 right now.  I don't expect to be stuck here forever, but then again, I do enjoy having a few beers while I play my games, so I lose more often than not, so who knows.  lol  I was around (edit)Much stronger during my peak than I am now, and then life got in the way.  I just started playing again about 3 months ago after a 15 year hiatus, and the game is so much different now than it was pre-computer, so I've got a ton of catching up to do.  We'll see what happens.

Unless you've had a lobotomy (and I hope you haven't) you can't go from 1950 to -1000... even if you haven't played for 15 years. -1000 players are not even using the basics and for you to get to 1950 those basics must be drilled into you and cannot be forgotten. You say the 'game has changed so much'. No it hasn't... Not at the level you are referring to. You're just repeating old cliche talk that you hear all the time. You look at any low level club or amateur games from the last 100 years and you'll see the same games and mistakes over and over again. The game has changed in the very highest levels but not at mine or your level. I'm not going to call you a liar in public, but I have huge doubts over what you've said. Jesus, you'd have to drink an entire brewery to drop that low if you were at 1950. Not having it, sorry. Though I do hope there's no scars around your brow. Mine are terrible. 2014 at the Royal Marsden. said it would help me but it's only turned me into a recluse with the weirdest... Well, I better not say anymore if I don't want to incriminate myself. yeah, 1950 to 1000 requires some brain damage at minimium, either that or you are 150 years old.
