I'VE NEVER HAD A HOLE IN ONE BUT I STILL PLAY GOLF. Sorry bout the all caps, forgot it was on.

You know you can edit your posts, correct?

Speaking of edits, I've revised my original posts, since a few of you elitists seem to have elected yourselves hall monitors of this thread.  Like I said, I don't plan on sticking around in this lower tier for very long, but you're entitled to your own opinions regardless.  I've never had an official FIDE rating, I just go by what AOL, and then Yahoo (I'm dating myself again), and now sites like Lichess and Chess.com tell me.  I take it with a grain of salt.  I play for fun and to kill time while I'm visiting my girlfriend during her bartending shifts, so yeah.  I consume my fair share, and <gasp!> sometimes I even smoke that diabolical marijuana while I play, and it's an absolute blast!  You really should try it sometime, it would do your personalities a world of good, but likely I'm preaching to a brick wall.  Obsessions with ratings and imaginary numbers instead of enjoying the game simply for the love of it is exactly why this thread exists in the first place.  With that said, I'm leaving my shop now and then I'm heading out for drinks.  Add me, we can play a few.  You may just enjoy yourselves.

3 of my friends failed the first 2 exam (below 50%) but did not drop. They stayed in the class and worked extra hard. Finally, they passed the class with an A because the professor allowed us to replace the lowest exam score with the final exam grade, which was cumulative. The point is, 2/5 exams they failed  but the other 3, they passed with A! The professor who had been teaching for 20+ years kept helping them, never discouraged them by telling to drop the class and try again next year.

I wonder why you, an untitled player think that it is ok to look down your nose at these player (potentially including me if I've played chess long enough), like you have achieved something in this small chess world. Even if you are a king like Magnus, without people playing chess, you are just a puppet king.

Thankfully this site is open for anyone to enjoy playing chess regardless of their ratings! happy.png

I agree with 52yrral. I'm 55 yrs old I just love the game. I may never break 1300-1400 though I learned how to play at age 7 from a cousin. My interest in life was not just to play chess. I find it fascinating though just watching how other players minds work on the board. Good luck to all you players that have the time to spend hours in Chess Books, DVD's and money on Chess Coaches. I'll stay on the side lines with just my love of the game for fun thank you very much.

Spending $$$ on coaches is a way to keep chess developing! If professional chess players earn no money, who else is gonna play this game? I cannot believe that professional gamers earn millions a year but professional chess players cannot! (don't count top 10)

Remember when you were 15, still a virgin and desperately trying to get laid?  It's like that.  At 63, I figure I can still become a grandmaster if I can just get the moves right.

I'm not knocking spending money on coaches or chess period. I'm just commenting on this player

lol to oregonpatzer.  I even spent money on coaches such as IM Valire Lavo for several months just to get an idea of how I could improve my game.

i only use this online chess as practice and any online rating is a joke. I play otb at least once a week and actually take my time because my uscf rating means a bit more to me personally

You mean your actual IRL OTB rating means more than a rating you get by playing who knows what online?

We have a heretic here.

I'll tell you why. Because we're idiots. If we weren't, our score would be above 1000.

I mean what is wrong with them?  why don't they just quit? Because not everybody cares about rating a lot of people play to enjoy the game. So to suggest people who are low rated should quit is silly it's a game everybody can enjoy regardless of rating.

yeah, 1950 to 1000 requires some brain damage at minimium, either that or you are 150 years old.

It could happen if they quit as a 1900 while they were still a kid.

Kids do thing like forget entire languages.

But yeah, it would be hard for an adult to lose more than 400-500 points under any circumstances not involving brain injury.

I'm still rated under 500 after 1000 games. I keep playing thinking I will improve. Usually my borad vision is bad. That's why I blunder. I'll look at what my opponents are doing without noticing somthing else they may be doing at the same time.

called being realistic. if you are rated 900 after 3000 games....it is obvious you suck, and should stop playing.

I play for fun. Sometimes when drunk/high sometimes when walking downtown foe food. Elo has never been a big thing for me. Just like a game. Why would I stop playing if I enjoy a game?

What's wrong with you? Some people just LIKE playing. Who are you to tell them they should stop just because they don't improve?

Again, because at that level (sub-1000), there is absolutely ZERO art and beauty. Games are mindless shuffling of pieces with a blunder every other move. If you have played a few games and are sub-1000....NO PROBLEM, he is just a beginner learning to play. BUT after playing thousands of games, and you are STILL sub-1000, sorry you really should just quit.

You are evaluating other people's decisions by applying your criterions, that's why you don't understand them. Other people can, and will, think differently from you, and once you realize that it won't be so mystifying for you. Chess is a game, and some people just enjoy playing a game with other people for the social interaction that's involved. For those who get intrigued by chess, and delve into its complexities, there can be a lot of rewards - but only if that side of the game appeals to the person, otherwise it's just a lot of work and effort with nothing in return for them.
I have no idea, though, why other people's choices for why they play chess should at all be something that concerns you.

Rubbish. Get a real life.
