I feel stuck

I started playing chess in September of last year and got my rating up to 1500 around May. Right after reaching 1508, the quality of my chess collapsed, and I fell to 1380. For the last four months, I've been in a cycle of almost breaking 1500, then going on losing streaks that can be 10-12 games long back below 1400, and then repeat. I feel stuck. I know I'm better than 1400 in theory, but I can't get past the 1500 mental block in my head. Does anyone have any tips for breaking through a mental block? I know chess plateaus happen, but this doesn't feel like that since I tend to collapse as a player near 1500. It feels like a mental strength issue more than skill. Any advice would be appreciated!

The mental thing about getting close to a new personal best and then dropping is very common. It isn't all mental though, part of it is just natural variance and due to the fact that you are pushing your current ability. You can try to keep the focus on learning instead of the rating numbers (that will help the mental block somewhat), but the best way to break through a new barrier like this is to simply mix up your study routine, or learn new things to implement into your game. It is difficult to progress to certain levels when you lack certain knowledge for the level.

I don't know if this resonates with you, but hope it helps happy.png

Improving at chess can be quite challenging, but there are various ways to enhance your skills.

For those looking to improve without coaching, here's some valuable advice:

1. Play Frequently: The more you play, the better you'll become at recognizing patterns and making strategic decisions.
2. Analyze Your Games: Review your past games to identify mistakes and areas where you can improve. This self-analysis is a powerful learning tool.
3. Focus on Tactics: Tactics play a crucial role in chess. Spend time solving tactical puzzles and exercises to sharpen your tactical skills.
4. Learn from Masters: Studying grandmaster games can provide insights into advanced strategies and tactics.

I’ve had the same thing happen to me recently, it’s quite normal and important, it took me around 2 months to get to 700
