I feel that I deserve a higher rating

Why not have an indicator of effort. However, I'm not saying to change the current rating system.

Perhaps the amount of effort, e.g. study through this website, like watching the training videos, doing the workouts, etc., could be rated somehow to reflect effort...  It would be interesting to see the correlation/trend in relation to the two numbers over time.

Dunno, just saying.

he should be able to see that through his tactics and the chess mentor ratings.

There is some good advice in this thread: the op who posted there had exactly the same problems as you:

Sometimes I feel that my rating is a bit low considering that I put a lot of effort into getting a higher rating. Its not my "fault" that I don't get the results I need despite me putting the effort in. I know those with "higher" ratings will disagree but I feel that I would be more motivated if my rating was 2000 (Maybe those at 2000 could go to 3000 for example). I just think people with 500 or 800, they try real hard but aren't rewarded enough for their efforts.

My point is it would be nice if effort = rating rather than luck/success = rating. I would like to point out this is a chess site and not an offical rating system, so why not increase ratings a bit? If I could be 2000 I'd be happy with that, title or no.

I'd be interested if anyone feels the same way.

Are you sobbing and saying this in a high pitched girly voice? Because that's how I imagine you thinking about this post while writing it.

maybe is his sister keep teasing him, so that might explained for his loss.

It's understandable that you want a higher rating. At least you're not asking for a title.

You are really a Perfect Idiot.

I think I read that 80-90% of all chess players believe they are underrated.

pinggo

is there a chance that the perfect idiot is a sandbagger? may be he is enjoying our conversation!

Are you talking about online chess? If so, one can only hope that you are not playing a number of players at the same time - that won't help. Concentrate on ONE game. Don't spread what knowledge you do have too thinly, would be my advice.

agreed...a smart young lad who sees it as a huge joke to put out idiotic bait threads to catch our comments

Now, a month or two ago I thought I was underrated.

But since then I've gained almost 150 rating points.

I still want to think I'm underrated, but when I've spent the past months thinking, I play like an 1800, I should be 1800, it's hard to change and think, I play like a 2000, I should be a 2000.

My past 2 or 3 tournaments have had performance ratings of over 2000 though I believe (or at least over 1950), so I should be able to fix my psychological issues and join the other 80-90 percent of chess players soon.

Well I wouldn't mind being a millionaire in Zimbabwe. In real life if I want to make money all I have to do is work x amount of days for it, for example clean x amount of toilets and get y amount of money for my efforts.

My rating is like some kind of religion no matter how hard I keep praying nothing good happens. I just would like some kind of mode that I could enable where I could be rewarded for effort. Surely all those games I play should be worth something. I'd be a CEO by now if this was real life.

Its not just about being a cry baby here. Hope you can see my point of view.

just take a tissue wipe the tears from your eyes, blow your nose and empty your bib

It's no use praying, and if all the games you are playing are junk then you're getting the reward you deserve. It's like me saying "Oh, I totally deserve a mathematics degree because of all the hard work I put in" when what I've actually done is write out "2 + 2 = 5" a thousand times a day for five years. You have to be practising to some purpose and effect, not just repeating the same mistakes continually.

funny article I know its a bit tongue in cheek but hey... as was said before inflating overall ratings will not bring much long term satisfaction to anyone. More important than your current rating is your current progress. Check out Magnus for example:

7yrs = 1700, 10yrs = 2000, 12yr = 2400, 14yrs = 2550, 16yrs = 2650, 18yrs = 2700, 20yrs = 2780, 21yrs = 2840

Magnus says that getting over 2000 was his "Eureka" moment, he suddenly moved from a linear growth to a quantum leap in understanding, gaining almost 600points between 10yrs and 14yrs.

Just shows how much brainier you get when your testosterone starts to spurt. Can someone mention this in the Why is Chess so Male Dominated thread

Your rating isn't supposed to be a measure of how much effort you put in, it's supposed to be an indicator of how good you are, based on your results. If you can't compete in games with 2000 players, you aren't going to achieve a 2000 rating. As for bumping everyone's ratings up by 500 to make you feel more "motivated", well, frankly no-one gives a crap about that.

Meditation, thinking, prayer, wishing, hoping, and finally-- desire, will not in itself alter reality.Working on your game is pretty much the name of the game. A gauge on your progress is your''opponents rating".If you play higher rated opponents and hold your own,or win, things are looking good. If your wins are beating lower rated players u are not really doing anything.Maybe, treading water in a very large chess ocean.
