I finally broke the 1600 barrier, went from 1200 to 1600 in 5 days.

Hey everyone,

I finally broke that 1600 barrier  that has eluded me for so long . I was 1200 in 30/08/2020 and on 03/09/2020, I'm 1600.  First of all I should thank all the people in this site, who has helped me so far with various questions I had.

Thanks to: lama, arisktotle, snudo, thematic player, punter, bode eric, clavius, jamestack, thriller fan, way of pain, der schaspieler, LM player, kings5min blitz, deranged, toldsted, lakers nephew, cm advice cabinet, jtm cann (Sorry if I missed any names)

What i did.

1. During this 5 days I analysed every single game I played using an engine (I only have chessmaster 9000 so I used that) and tried to see where I went wrong and make sure not repeat them. If I couldn't  understand where I wrong I posted the question in this forum.

2.  Most importantly for the first time in my life I started learning chess opening theory by watching youtube videos (chesswebsite videos are great). I didn''t study all of them, I only studied fully the opening I'm going to use. You need one for e4 and one for d4, then from other openings I only studied like 3 moves that I could use to defend when they are played against me. I did all this in 5 days. Also I just chose the easiest openings and defenses, because no time to study complex ones.

3. I have never done a tactic puzzle, and did no tactics. However this can be misleading because I have played many blitz games before, and all the tactics I learned are from games I played.

4. End game theory a little bit  I previously learned, as I was always interested in them.

So what I wanted to show was I one of those players just roaming around 1200 to 1400 range, never improving, but 5 days of study (actually openings which I never did before ) made the difference. It was thematic player who does free chess lessons here who looked at my games when I was around 1200, and told me you should be rated higher and not much for me to teach so it inspired me to study and prove a point to myself I was better

Now I'm going to take a break from chess and concentrate on work and  study related to my job. Probably my rating will go down from now onwards because I will play less and will not have much time to analyse anymore. Also going above 1600 you need to study the game, so will be difficult to for me to mange time.  So don't laugh by the time you read this post my rating is somewhere around 1300 lol.  I just wanted to prove a point to myself by breaking the 1600 barrier as a person whose main profession is not chess, at least once and I did that, so I'm happy.

Also this advice, may not be suitable for beginners in the game, so don't be misled by the post, even though I increased my rating by about 400 in 5 days, I have overall played more than 2000 games in this website.  So if you are beginner you first need to play as much games as you can.

Thanks for all who helped again.

I did the same thing but In 3 days. look at my blitz stats :). But my case was a bit different. I used to study chess for months beforehand. the moment I went to 1600 in 3 days was the moment I permanently switched to 1. d4

samchessman123

@marqumax: Thanks. I looked at your stats. Wow amazing. Do you have  a trainer as well, I think you have the potential to reach good heights in this game.

@Siddhant: Thanks. Hey you have only played 250 games, so don't be that harsh. I played 2000 games here, and may be about 1000 more somewhere else before going on the streak.  I think you should study a little bit of opening theory not too much, from youtube videos etc and analyse all your games and you will be good. Also since you are beginner you have the advantage to develop lots of good habits early, since I have played a lot more, I had lots of bad habits to get rid of, which is more difficult.

@Igor Kravitz: I have work and stuff so I don't have time to play. I have not played a single daily chess game by the way, so there is no rating there. I only have time for 10 minute games.

Congrats!
