I found a move Stockfish didn't?

I was going over one of my games with Stockfish and in this position, diagram below, the engine really likes the moves f3 or Bh6. But once I input the move I actually played, Bg5, not only does it approve but now says its the best move in the position. Now the continuation it gives isnt what I played so I struck out there but Im still shocked that somehow I actually saw the best move it didnt even recommend. Ive heard GMs in their commentary talk about this happening with engines but thought that was kind of above my level to actually happen.

Anyone else make one of these moves in their games?

this happens on weak hardware or when the program is not set right. some times it takes long time to find the right moves. i have seen it happen for years with many programs. but on very few occations the computer just doesnt understand whats happening. on my smart phone after 10 min eval. of postion it gives f3 +/-0.96 Bg5 scores +/-0.94 i am sure yours gave diff.

interesting. I'll have to check to see if our numbers match up when I get back home. If the program isnt set right how would I fix that?

I've noticed that I've done it often when I'm analyzing my games, it is a fun feeling to find a better move than the engine in certain positions, but keep in mind that the engine will always find it eventually...just depends on cpu strength and time allowed/depth.  I only have Houdini3 which is already somewhat outdated so I guess it might happen more for me when I quickly cycle through my moves.

that was definitely the best part. I felt really good about myself for finding it. Even if I didnt play the best continuation afterwards lol.

On my setup, Stockfish prefers Bg5 from the outset.

Yea Im looking at my program now and it gives f3 +0.87 and Bg5 +0.96 so I guess something there is off. It definitely isnt seeing Bg5 unless I show it though. Weird

Out of curiosity, after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bb5 Nd4 5 Ba4 Bc5 6 Nxe5 0-0 7 Nd3 Bb6 8 e5, how long does it take the comp to come up with 8...c6!!  ?

(This seemed vaguely related to the thread topic)

Almost immediately for me at depth 14, but doesn't rate it as well as Ne8 until depth 18.  Around 20-22 they even out but Ne8 keeps jumping ahead first.  I feel like I am commentating on a horse race.

Damn, computers are good xD

At depth 19 I started seeing Bg5 listed.  At depth 22 it starts to toggle between Bg5 and f3.   Bh6 joins the lead steadily at depth 25.  Maybe you need to wait longer.....

I let it sit for at least 5 min and past depth 19. Did not pop up. FWIW the following move black doubled rooks and play followed with Re7, Rxe7, Bxe7,Rf4.

Whats weird about Stockfish is it doesnt show any other move but what it considers the best move. I dont know if its just something in the settings or what. I know Houdini shows more than just the #1 move.

Do a google search on "setting stockfish 5 parameters" and you'll find info on how to configure the engine based upon your hardware.

Zigwurst

I have my Stockfish set to show the top 4 engine choices.

does that mean your move is better than stockfish?

i ate tuna for dinner tonight

This happens from time to time. In order to get deeper in the search, engines first look at the moves they deem the most promising, leaving others for later (or even downright ignoring them).

I am using it straight out of the box.  No star trek settings.

Perhaps yous can tells us whats computer yous are using, what version of stockfish and post a screenshot.  I didn't have to wait 1 minute, so yous saying 5 minutes makes me thinks yous have a slow homey yo strollin picking up the chicks computer.  You know what I am saying daddy o?  Yous dig?

MacBook Pro, Stockfish version 1.0.5. I'll have to post a screen shot later.

Im looking through everything and still cant find how to change it so it shows more than the top move. Googled setting the system parameters and read the info on their site but it doesnt really mentioin how to change this. Is the reason I seemingly dont have these options because I downloaded Stockfish through Apples App Store not from the Stockfish site?

Depth 28 and Komodo still prefers 8... Ne8.

Stockfish preferred c6 at first, but then changed to Ne8:
