In other words, I remember when a higher rated player was watching my own play, he told me that if he could get the positions I manage to get, he'd win every game. But I just persevered with the idea of positional play and systematically improving pieces. More and more I found that sooner or later my opponent would blunder, trying to push too hard for a win. Whereas if two opponents of similar ability are playing one-another, there isn't too much to be gained from always trying hard to win, since presumably the opponent might be able to defend.

I found more and more that by playing positionally, even though my initial attack didn't suceed, I would have a positional advantage elsewhere and use that to win. That's very demoralising for the opponent too.
