Chess being what it is, I think it's a good idea to become ambivalent about which color you have to play. In fact, often as not...I look forward to playing black.
I hate playing black to start
It might get a little boring to continuously play White. I seem to remember a fellow starting a line here a few weeks back complaining that he only ever got the White pieces.
I actually find that I almost play better with black. this may be due to better opening selection, or because I am a sligthly more defensive player.
Oddly though this percieved increase in ability does not reflect itself in the statistics!
I have fewer loses playing Black (also fewer wins). I know my Black repetoire inside out, while I have a much broader White repetoire. Also I am happy to repeat a line that ends in a draw with Black; while with White if I draw, I start looking for a new moves.
I am actually being diabolical here - I am kind of looking for someone with a super high rating that likes to play black and is sort of a black playing genius and then ask him if he might want to coach me for a couple of games ( nothing serious - rated 1400 and I don't have the talent to jump up anytime soon - talking recreational thingy here )
I wouldn't want to play just one color or the other too many games in a row, since I think to be good at chess you should learn how to play either side. If you get too good at playing white, for instance, when you have to play black you may not be used to it. Plus, I think it would get boring playing just one color for too long.
i actually prefer white because of my preference of openings. however, i completely agree that a good chess player should make no distinctions between colors.
-- I would think that dogs should make good chess players because they can only see in black and white
I dont understand this: Its 50/50 if u play black or white.
not true white has an advantage from the start..i think rybka puts it at .2 or something around there
White has the first opportunity to create an advantageous position, if he so chooses. That being said, black has the opportunity to play a defensive scheme that is familiar to him. I find that I am often have more knowledge than my white opponent in the openings I play as Black. An e4 player has to learn a method of play against all Black defenses, while a french player has only to learn the french. Despite the fact that most French positions are advantageous to white, the extra practice and more focused study on the opening can give a certain kind of advantage to the Black player, though I doubt this is as big of a factor on the professional level as it is with my level of play.
wow really - however I whimper I am presently playing a 1700 rated player in a tournament that started today - and he is two pawns up - end game - but I have all night to whimper - it is turn based but I asked and we agreed to finish the game tonight - and he said that I am a good player - but my two lost pawns tell me otherwise
- guess I am hooped - at 1700 against 1400 can't see him doing anything wrong two pawns up - I can only hope - sigh
Keep in mind football players (American) start off with a coin flip. They don't make a big deal out of it. Often, losing the coin toss is actually quite an advantage.
Black can be played as aggressively as white It's not a matter of the color played. It's a matter of the skill level. It's just that.
Not too long ago, I had black. I immediately launched an attack. White said to me...now this is really stupid: "Hey! What the hell are you doing! Black is supposed to play defense!!!"
- - - well with me I just like chess - - - today two people told me I am a good player one guy who is presently whumping me in a tournament - - - but for me I am forced to focus my attention so what that does for me is that after most chess games I am actually relaxed and feel good - - - a good game of chess for me whether I win or lose is for me sort of a mental vacation - - - and for me I hope this doesn't change - - - I hope nothing happens anytime soon which turns me off the game - - - and as for me I think I am at my best - - like 1400 - - I don't see me becoming 2000 anytime soon - - - for one I am not going to spend 24 hours a day reading every chess book out there and learning every opening and such - - - in high school I was a nerd and if I was going to do the book nerd live in the books thing I would choose another subject other than chess - - - anyway what you are talking about just is happening to me in this tournament game - - - he launched an attack which destroyed my castle - - - and I am playing white - - - so with me 1400 and him 1700 and now the end game with him two pawns up - - - well I think I have a one in a 154003 chance of winning or drawing ( and I calculated that chance on the possibility that he is laughing so hard he whacks the " draw " button by mistake )
- do you like playing black - are you successful playing black - are you good at playing black - is there any one in the world that is actually a genius at playing black and actually prefers to play black - you suppose?
