I have high hopes for the new Bobby Fischer movie and here's why:

I think the hatred of Fischer is justified. Sure he was brilliant but he really didnt do anything after he won the title besides lose his mind. Yes, chess in America was boosted but that was because of the USA vs. Russia feel. Fischer wasnt the cornerstone for that, the media was. If it was some other American the same thing would have happened. My problem with Fischer is that he refused to play Karpov. Whether he was afraid, fed up with FIDE, etc., it doeant matter. Just play the match. It is a boardgame, lose the political attitude.

I mean, if those religious people can boost up cheaply made crap like Son of God and God's not Dead at the box office why can't chess people do the same?

Gods Not Dead is actually a very good movie.

Agreed. (with I_Am_Second)

Playing Karpov would hAve added momeNTUM TO THE "Fischer Boom"" and would have been very beneficial to American chess. Whether it was selfishness or madness that kept him from playing, he denied us that,

Atakattu

I only wish they show only the good aspects of him in this movie, so chess players will draw inspiration from the movie and become better. Every person has flaws; beating a genius' flaws is no gain for anybody.

Both Toby Mac and Bobby Fischer are 5.9". Looking forward to this movie...

That's a stupid reason to have a problem with Fischer. There was nothing "political" about his demands, he believed he wasn't getting a fair deal. Carlsen dropped out of the FIDE world championship before last in the same way. If a professional sportsman (or any professional) doesn't like their terms then they are entitled to refuse the contract.

As for the movie I believe it will be crap. Movies based on real people usually aren't that good as a rule, much like chess movies. A good movie about chess would be some kind of thriller or drama with chess as a part, like From Russia With Love but a greater chess element.

Every account of Fischer has him either taller than 6', or 6'4", or 6'2". The idea of Toby M doing this is depressing; reminds me of Ralph Machio, ie. the perpetual looking and sounding teenager.

And this chess movie may even  have a James Bond car chase scene, with Euwe chasing Fischer to the airport. That would be awesome!

Fischer....Bobby Fischer.

MrDamonSmith

Sigh......Toby Maguire. What were they thinking? They could've just picked Steve Urkel, it would've made just as much sense.

Chess.com should make an animated parody of the '72 WCC.

I think we can fit all these great ideas in there somewhere.

Yes, among other things the final straw was that it was his view that if the score was still drawn after a long period like 25 games or so, he as the defending champion should retain the title. The terms he offered were perfectly fair.

No. Fischer wanted unlimited games with the first to win ten, draws not counting. If both were to acheive 9 wins the title would be retained. FIDE gave Fischer everything but the 9-9 rule because many agreed it was too big of an advantage to the champion. Fischer still refused to play because FIDE didnt give him EVERYTHING he wanted... You use Carlsen as an example but who ever said I liked him?

If they can make people the size of Hobbits in the Lord Of The Rings I see no reason why they can't make Toby 6' 4" tall...

The Guardian has reviewed it:

2/5 stars

"Zwick’s film, unlikely to explicate the game for newbies nor to sate the curiousity of the chess fan, is one for a rainy afternoon when you’ve time on your hands and Prawn Sacrifice won’t seem to download."
