I am new on this site and haven't played any games here yet so I'm not familiar with the Chess.com player pool. I heard it's quite good. You will improve by leaps and bounds if you play 30/0 games and analyze each game afterward without an engine. Do lots of chess puzzles but don't start making any moves until you can solve the puzzle in your head first. This will teach you to calculate, an important skill you will need to develop. Also, forget about your rating. It will slowly start to climb as long as you put in the effort. Good luck.

I started playing chess a few day ago. I new how to play chess for years and played a game every now and then but have just started it as a hobby online. And I'm practically horrible. I've won nearly 1/3rd of my games and nearly all of them is from the other person resigning. Currently I have a score of around 800 and it keeps slightly increasing then dropping by a lot. How long until I can get good, or even average? How long did it take you?

Read this thread.

Shows lots of analysis with lots of jokes for beginners, then you won't be bored about it.
