I need help with getting my rating past 1400

I feel like I’m stuck at 1400 in rapid and 1100-1200 in blitz. Any tips on how to improve in both? I feel that I have the ability to do better but I tend to lose games when I’m winning while others I win soundly.

my average game is 0-2 blunders, although I had some pretty bad games recently where there were slightly more.

Don’t know how this comment thread works...

Tbh...I would just say what almost everyone else says..... do tactics...bla bla.... But I really dont know if there is any concrete step that would guarantee that you would break the barrier. I somehow crossed 1500 by playing and playing and improving naturally.

Try to reduce blundering as much as possible. That will help you go much farther. When I was at 1400 rapid I did a bunch of tactics, watched a bunch of chess vids, played games then analyzed them, and that helped me improve drastically.

Fair enough 👌

Should I dive into different openings? I feel as tho I’m solid with white(been doing the Vienna system. And for black I do Sicilian mainly. My struggle is against D4.

Yes a bit but not too much. Like you must have a repertoire ...maybe know two openings for both white and black in depth. I think you already have them....and if thats the case maybe learn another one for both colours..... and just learn a few basics for popular openings ...which you may not like but you will have to face it often..... for example the sicilian ..or the french ....etc

ehh, openings are not the best til 1600 apart from the first few moves bc your opponent won't play the best responses until then. You can use the time you would have spent studying openings to study other stuff that you would use. I would just say stick with what you have been doing, as you have experience and know the plans. Against d4 I play d5, as it is simple and flexible. You can play nf6 too, but that is kinda complex.

Noted 👌

I was doing the advance version, however I found I had better chances with the exchange variation.

I actually go for the exchange too.....coz I feel its where I have to learn the least compared to the other variations.

Honestly just use the Sicilian Defense against 1. E4, and you can use the Nimzo Indian against 1.D4. You will win every game.

Anonymous_Dragon

nope... I think he should test it out himself and see what he's comfortable with. I dont think so any opening has an absolute advantage over the others.

messef2008

But Sicilian has highest win rate

Also Nimzo keeps ur options open

Okay, hear me out. This isn’t the most popular advice, but it will help you get past the barrier of 1400 rating. You wanna get past that 1400 rating limit,  right?  So if this advice helps you achieve that, then it’s a success.

I don't have to worry about what happens later on.

Okay, I'll help you achieve that. Try this advice. Shortcut to get past 1400 rating limit.

Here's the deal : You gotta use cheapos. That's right. You gotta rely on a lot of cheapos. Always use nasty tricks to confuse your opponent to make a mistake. Have that attitude in mind. Live with it. Become one with this attitude.

By doing this, you will sneak past the limit of 1400 rating and your wish will turn into reality.
