Hi, I have an issue when playing chess. Many times when I lose, I get so angry it ruins my day. But I don't think that's a healthy behaviour at all, so I'd like to change that. What should I do? Meditate? Quit chess?

We all tilt just stop playing when you tilt

I have this problem too. And I think that, at least in me, I feel this way when I lose a game that I feel like I should have won, either because my opponent is “too weak to beat me,” or because I made a blunder that I “should have seen,” or because I lost because of some other “unfair problem.”

I think that for me, it becomes easier to accept my losses when I just sit down and recognize that every loss that I have is a legitimate loss, and every victory is a legitimate victory. When I accept that the reason I lose to my opponents is because that’s just the level of chess I play at right now. Or when I accept that I just can’t see all the things on a chessboard that I wish I could see.

So, maybe that’s part of the solution. Just accepting that losses are legitimate, and that the only way to stop losing in that way is to actually work on those aspects of your game.

Whenever you lose a game, stop playing and analyse it first to learn from your mistakes while the imprint is still fresh and to channel the negative emotions of the loss towards a positive goal: improving.
