If you want to get better solve tactics problems, all kinds of checkmates and chess puzzles (alot of them) without moving any pieces on a board you can also sharpen you're tactical eye by playing over and over the chess games of GM's like Shirov,Tal,Wang Hao,Boris Spassky,Judit Polgar,Marshall,Nezhmedinov,Larry Christansen, Bobby Fischer, John Nunn the list of deadly tacticians you can learn a lot of great stuff from is endless.

Puzzles sure all the time but the GM games are so hard and dry to stare at and i need a translator to point out the why. It so difficult to see on my own but thank you alec i will try...

Refer to what i said in http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/power-leveling

If you have any questions, message me, I don't really play on chess.com, but I played a few live games and found the chess computer on "impossible" to be a descent warm up (as in I beat it a good amount).

Hi, from Italy!

To Square205.

I realized that you are serious in chess since you pick up the basic questions. I stumbled into a very helpful work by a GM chess teacher with a psicology degree, that can help you. It is very very clear-simple-easy but also very deep in undestanding chess and he answer to all your questions (And make you better in chess!).  Please click on following link

You will find the presentation of the work and you will get a free a lot of stuff ( a video mini-course and all new lessons, a access to the blog ecc.

Please, let me know what do you think about this approach.

See you!

Giulio

Hey guys growing up playing chess there have been a lot of things i know from experience "this is better than that" or "this feels right whereas that doesn't" but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. DONT BE CRAZY! Chess is an ancient maze that due to our own limitations appears to be in a constant state of flux. But it can only have 3 possible outcomes so the only thing you can be sure of is you have to move!

When i posted this thread i was worried that getting better required an ability i didnt have or remembering a number of things i dont care to know. But thank you all for showing me that getting better is just a matter of learning to read some road signs i didnt know to look for!

I never imagined my rant would garner the level of respose that i have so far enjoyed but just as a quick success story In my studying i found myself having to look up some chess terms here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_terminology

and then stumbled onto some obscure value theory here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece_relative_value

and in just doing that i felt at least a little better. Visiting wikipedia hasn't solved my problem but i dare you to read that glossary and NOT find a term you didn't know or 3 terms you now understand differently. Sure i had heard it before but you can never understand anything to in its most relevant form than you can in the present!

Anyways just as an update I have just now started to research Giulio, and 911's suggestions and have found Giulio's diving in the middle of the pool and swiming towards my deep end while 911's is comfortably walking me in from the stairs and showing me some great teaching techniques along the way. I Also love gambit chess so I am totally gonna get that "how to beat your dad" book, while i cant help but find myself tripping over references to "my system" in almost everything I read. So when i do get a copy of that one im thinking i might as well spring for the hardcover ;)

So thanks guys i have just begun my journey to get better but you have already shown me that i can and i will if i go... thada way ;)

To square. Well! I accept you as friend. Study the work of Smirnov very deeply: it is very powerful! Since free lessons are very good in my opinion the very best is to buy the Course "GM's Secrets" because you will find 100% of your needs. You will pay some dollars but they dollars that you will get back in Elo points! Ciao

I think, light of the world, that we could get better at chess by getting better at dealing with our emotions. I think that chess is not just played on the board. There is a lot of gamesmanship in chess. Sometimes I get beaten because I get emotional and the promptings of my heart clouds the ideas in my head. eg how do I react when I am upset by my opponents behaviour? I'd rather not resign because of my emotions, or squander an advantage. I've read a lot of books. I have difficulty reading people.

I finished with e1 suggestions and i feel like i am playing much better. I also just got the book "how to beat your Dad at chess" i like it ok :) barnes and noble had it in stock but not "my System". I am so thankfull for e1's help... it was that Chess Kid curriculium that helped me the most but playing a few logic puzzles before a game helps a ton too...
