I only play against premiums

I got a premium membership yesterday and since then my rating has gone down like crazy because I only play against other premiums. Can I turn that off by any chance? Thank you!

The system tries to pair premiums together in the initial attempt and then goes to the wider pool. You can't modify the behavior.

Really, that is interesting, I didn't know that, I thought that it is completely random. What is the reason for this, if I may ask?

I really don't know. Just found out about it myself a few weeks ago.

Ok, thanks anyway.

Intresting i didn’t know that either

It is a plausible explanation. You could be right.

I would honestly rather play in the wider pool. This may have a chance to separate the ratings of the premiums and the non premiums making it so that premiums could be overrated or underrated compared to the non premiums.

I do get premium opponents from time to time. happy.png So it is probably not that bad.

It doesn't exclusively pair premiums together. It's just that if there are two premiums looking for games at the same time and their seeks are compatible it pair them, but if a quick match isn't found, it goes to the wider pool.

Is there something wrong with playing other premium members

Also how do you notice stuff like that

It makes sense; people with a premium account are probably considered to be far less likely to cheat. I'd leave things as is and just take advantage of the new features you've unlocked to get better. Your rating will eventually climb back up and those non-premium players won't stand a chance against you.

The other thing is most likely the premium players might have longstanding accounts that have had time to "settle" into the real elo of the player.

Whereas any random person could use a free email address to create an account and then select their strength as "Advanced" and start with 1600 rating despite not even knowing how to checkmate with Rook+King. So it's quite possible you've been paired with players with inflated incorrect ratings.

I noticed this happening when I first signed up to premium, I was logged in on my computer, but then when I decided to install the app on my phone I realised I forgot my password! So I had to join as a 'guest' and ended up playing a "1600" (guest) who was probably around 400-600 in strength.

If you played numerous non-paid accounts and reviewed the games, they would see their game rating essentially for free. So it is more advantageous to have paid accounts play each other versus a paid playing a free account.

Premium players are much more likely to be invested in learning. Thus playing against harder opponents every game will make it much harder to gain rating. Chess.com should either seperate ratings for premium and non-premium users, or they shouldn't use this matching algorythm. I am concidering cancelling my premium because of matchmaking behaving like this.

I tried the premium out and nothing changed...my rating never decreased, and I couldn't tell any difference in my opponents strength at all...I did notice that almost everyone I played was a premium member
