What do you need?

Play slower games, and make more than 3 moves.

I feel like I do not get enough practice on this site.

It seems you have played 89 games since you joined last Feb.

Not even 2 per week.

Also the last 30 days have seen you drop by 400 or so points.

I'd take a look at the games from just before your drop, and compare them to now.

Check how many moves it takes you to win against how many to lose, on average.

Do you win way more as a specific colour?

Highly recomentd watching a bunch of videos put out by "Gotham Chess" on You Tube.

He has a bunch on openings, some on when to trade pieces, and is very informative throughout all the vids.

good luck.

I'm a subscriber of Gotham Chess. He posts some very helpful videos. I'd also recommend looking at your analysis for some games. If you see what you did wrong and what you can improve, that can be very helpful.

Post your games in the Forum and ask for comments.

A sugestion: is it possible to include all participants, not only the first 500, in the classification? It would motivate to play and face challenges. Thanks for your answer

Don’t listen to those who say you’re too bad and should quit. If you are willing to work hard, you can advance.

Play more chess.

Play longer time controls. At least 10 minutes, preferably longer.

Stop playing bullet.

Gothamchess is a good place to start. He has many low-rated viewers and tends to have them in mind when he teaches. He uses twitch and also uploads his videos to YouTube.

Learn a repertoire of appropriate openings well. Gotham has a video showing his opinions on good openings for players of various levels of play.

Practice tactics with puzzles.

Read a book on strategy and positional aspects of the game.

Go over your long games by yourself and then with an engine. Learn from your mistakes.

It is good to go over games of stronger players. Learn what they do.

Happy hunting!

And don't listen to anyone with a John Doe pawn in their profile.

What do you feel is your greatest challenge in a game?

Dear Roccopardo,

I am a certified, full-time chess coach, so I hope I can help you. happy.png Everybody is different, so that's why there isn't only one general way to learn. First of all, you have to discover your biggest weaknesses in the game and start working on them. The most effective way for that is analysing your own games. Of course, if you are a beginner, you can't do it efficiently because you don't know too much about the game yet. There is a built-in engine on chess.com which can show you if a move is good or bad but the only problem that it can't explain you the plans, ideas behind the moves, so you won't know why is it so good or bad.

You can learn from books or Youtube channels as well, and maybe you can find a lot of useful information there but these sources are mostly general things and not personalized at all. That's why you need a good coach sooner or later if you really want to be better at chess. A good coach can help you with identifying your biggest weaknesses and explain everything, so you can leave your mistakes behind you. Of course, you won't apply everything immediately, this is a learning process (like learning languages), but if you are persistent and enthusiastic, you will achieve your goals. happy.png

In my opinion, chess has 4 main territories (openings, strategies, tactics/combinations and endgames). If you want to improve efficiently, you should improve all of these skills almost at the same time. That's what my training program is based on. My students really like it because the lessons are not boring (because we talk about more than one areas within one lesson) and they feel the improvement on the longer run. Of course, there are always ups and downs but this is completely normal in everyone's career. happy.png

I hope this is helpful for you. happy.png Good luck for your chess games! happy.png

A titled player spamming advertisements is not helpful.

I'm new but really like the feature where I can play out different outcomes before I make a decision on games with long time limits
Avatar of hazengalilei

Me too! I think it's a great way to practice. Bullet chess is a bit much for me.

You would be surprised how many positive messages I got because of these kind of comments. If something is not so helpful for you, it doesn't mean that it is not helpful for someone else. happy.png By the way, if you take a closer look at my comment, you'll see that it's not an advertisement, I just tell the truth. happy.png I didn't say that 'come on, choose me, I'm a superb coach!!' happy.png I have 31 satisfied students (you can take a look at my profile and my forum for their comments), so I don't need to advertise myself like this. happy.png I just want to help players who really want to improve and ask for help.. happy.png

I've taken a quick look at some of your games.

You need to learn "opening principles". Google the quoted line with chess. It will help you alot.
