Yeah, the rules need updated bigly. To suit the modern attention span. A blunder should result in a pie in the face while an air horn sounds to some strobe lighting. A draw should be decided by arm wrestling and a stalemate should activate a trap door where both players drop into a tank of brightly coloured gunge.

OK, chess may lose a little of its valuable, meditative quality but think of the ratings!

How about a blitz game with 4000 lb. Cast concrete pieces.  It requires both chess skill and experience as a heavy equipment operator. 

We could make tag team chess match. After one player makes a move, he run over the obstacle path, punch the chess clock, his partner runs over the obstacle path, makes a move. The cycle repeats.

Carlsen with shades and suit... Kaspy with waistcoat and cigar... dance girls... classic disco sing along... alcohol... is fun yes?!

I would suggest a new mechanics of the game.

Each player will put pieces in ascending order. White will first put 1 of his piece first, then Black will put 2. White would put 3, then Black would put 4 and so on until all of the pieces are on the half of the board nearest to the player. This will eliminate book moves and also would diversify the game which would not make the game stale every time you play.

I had an idea for a while which I think could positively affect chess rules.

What about if pawn promotions did not automatically mean a new queen on the board, but a player could only promote to a piece he or she had already lost (that the opponent captured).

This could dramatically influence the results of games and the dynamics of strategy. Consider how, if a player had not lost any pieces yet, he would have to sacrifice a bishop or knight so that he could promote the pawn. Or in endgames there could be much more positional struggles if neither side could have more than one queen at any given time. (This would also basically mean that chess sets no longer had to provide extra queens).

If you want to make games more exciting and spectator friendly, this is a great place to start.
