I think it's the opposite... it's especially likely he'll give it away if it is Nepo sine he has ABSOLUTELY zero to prove against that particular challenger.
If Caruana won and Carlsen retired, for example, then it might tarnish his legacy since he never won a game off Caruana in their previous match... but with Nepo? He'd literally have nothing to win and everything to lose... this would only exacerbate his stated reasons for not wanting to play (that he felt no reward when winning, so all the work was not worth it anymore).
