I used to like chess--now I have no motivation

Every time I play, I find that I'm often not trying my hardest, as I used to do. I often goof around and not take things very seriously. I used to have more eagerness to learn and grow, but now I feel like my rating has reached a plateau. I'm worried I will be stuck like this forever! Help!

Well, if you have no motivation, then of course you will plateau.

Everyone has these periods when you are initially very excited and want to learn everything about chess, then you just become bored with it. It is not a bad thing. It may be a sign that chess is not a good hobby for that person. Any hobby should be enjoyed.

I think that we all have these kinds of periods. I know that I do, and I've been playing for a long time. Here are a few humble thoughts of mine. First, a decent break from playing or thinking about chess at all could be beneficial. (1-2 Weeks) I do this whenever I get discouraged because I have a losing streak, or I just feel like I'm not on top of my game. Second, I think that searching out a chess coach or a qualified mentor for assistance could be beneficial because that person may be able to immediately spot something that could help you raise your rating very quickly. I know that having a second set of eyes look over my mistakes often helps me. Third, if you haven't, try to determine what personal goals you have for your chess and what you enjoy about it. For example, are you wanting to play in competition or just for fun? Are you wanting to teach others, perhaps a child or family member? In other words, set a goal for yourself to focus on. In closing, I'll mention a new thought. It helps me to understand that emotional feelings are not constant. For example, one may feel sad, happy, encouraged, or discouraged from one day to the next. Emotions are often fickle. Perhaps, you will feel better at a later time? Best of luck to you. happy.png

people learn to swim and u try too. but sometimes learn everything that people do, can be a boring. just like chess. why don't u think something difference in playing whether in opening, mid or endgame. sure u lose more but maybe u discover something different that can give u an advantage. rather than give up, maybe u find eureka, hence normal ordinary learning doesn't give much effect. carlsen learn to play by intuition before he get real mentors

My chess app has just updated, it's gone from a slick enjoyable experience, to something reminiscent of a 1970's games console. It's taking me around five attempts to get a piece to move, Whilst being accompanied by a cheap synthesised sound? Is it the first of April? Somebody please help.

Happens to me as well. Now am trying to regain that lost enthusiasm somehow. i remember in another chess platform i played 20 losing game however i want without thinking too much strategies until hunger for winning kicks in again. it helped for me. Except the rating part, passion is back. and the cycle continues. hehe.

I have that from time to time. Was ready to quit a few months ago. What I did was: Bought a book of annotated great historic games, such as the Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games. Played through one game a day on a real board actively comparing my candidates with what was actually played. Spent one hour every day working through IM Silman's How to Reassess Your Chess, on a board. Totally gave up playing and even watching blitz and bullet.

Very good answer by justinair23.

If i play too much online or in other ways become too obsessive about chess, i tend to get tired and lose my energy and motivation to do the thinking, calculation etc. Taking a few weeks of vacation from chess has done the trick. And to spend less time on chess in general. Once i do play or study, i do it with diligence, instead of doing it often and sloppy.

try to concentrate on slow games otb ,things that can help with motivation are things like watching chess movies ie feature films and the bbc master game series showing and explaining real games from an age when grandmasters made mistakes as well as great moves-these days they make neither also you could try kasparovs book series 'my great predecessors' on classic games of the past and like stated by someone else go through the games on a physical board. also learn the theory behind your favourite opening using fritz trainers(using chessbase) which is a mixuture between a chess analysis program and video and also research opening books

The best part about tournaments is playing blitz and going out to eat with friends.
