Sudoku was conceived as a way to waste time - as are crosswords, non-informative articles in newspapers, and ultimately chess.

I hate it too, but I wouldn't feel qualified to make a value judgement on it.

I second the world of warcraft idea and see no problem with sudoku but ofcourse its your decision.

For real, try something called Lumosity ... But only when aren't already tired from chess.

World of Warcraft is actually fun and I guarantee you will quickly take your attention away from chess.com ;]

Or flight simulators on the iPad ... blowing stuff up is sooooo much more fun than killing poor little foot soldiers with really big heads

Its like any other such thing, moderation is the key.   Learning to budget some time each day or once a week for the game, and to control yourself yet still have your hobby, is a personal growth that will serve you well for a lifetime.   Giving up your hobby, if you love the game, may work for the specific issue but the next thing you like to do may also become a problem, because you did not learn self control the first time around.

Yep, I believe this is the best advice given so far. Of course, the problem is can one control their chess intake.

OK.  .... Let's See:  ... If you want to "quit" an activty, Start by asking for advice from people who are actively Involved in the activity, because they would be the "best" people to .... um .....  ok ....... let's start over .....  Say you Want "advice" about how to stop doing something by getting ideas from people who Don't want to stop doing that ....... because ......... OK, let's just think this through: .... suppose you want to .... um, can I get back to you? I'm kinda busy playing chess now....

that is such an awesome idea. really 1 million points to you. but you still can play chess. going to the beach is awesome nevertheless

i only want one day to rather focus more on business than chess, but why quit chess you can just reduce it. Its like sport its healthy to think...

chess is your friend, its good for your brain i believe.

their have been scientific studies that show a routine where you get not enough new impulses actually harms you and chess is the guarantee you always see something new and think...

Lol I basically live at the beach

Oh, manfred, I just reread your #11, and Love it!

"11. If you see two people playing chess, do NOT walk over to watch. Instead, march straight past them, head thrown back, with a haughty smirk because you know in your heart what weaklings they are."

Please, can I do That even if I Don't quit playing chess?  Please?!!
