If a GM is playing as white and is going for a draw, what does he do?

I've heard people say before that if a GM is playing as white and for whatever reason is playing purely for a draw, it is almost impossible to avoid a draw (see Ivanchuk - Carlsen from Tata Steel in January http://www.chess.com/news/carlsen-draws-nonsense-game-with-ivanchuk-maintains-lead-at-tata-steel-4820).
If white wants a quick draw, how does he best go about this?
