Im going to keep track of the 12th game as if Boris and Anand are playing Economy Chess. For those who are not familiar with EC: its a variant where possesion of the board is important.

Here's a video explaining how it works:

Currently we are at move 12 and this is what the game looks like in EC:

The game has come to a point where the players can buy pieces. Boris could resupply his pawns to repare his pawn structure. If he does so Anand might save a bit longer to buy knights and bisshops- Escpecially knights could come in handy if Boris has an elaborate pawnstructure.

Its nice that both players have the same income. Anand had slightly higher income for some time due to Boris' 5... Ne7. Boris position seems slightly better to conquer new squares and get an economical advantage. Bb5 for instance is a not so usefull move for position, but he would get a slightly better income than Anand.

After move 16:

Quite some changes in only 4 moves!

Boris's income is much stronger now and he has passed Anand in savings. Both players are able to buy a rook now. Or a knight/bisshop + a pawn.

Boris had protected his 'realm' pretty good. All his owned squares are behind his pawns and his bisshop is covering the entry too. Anand should try to capture the neutral squares while he tries to set up his position.

After move 19:

This game appearantly is drawn. But is it? Its black turn to move, and after it he'll get income. If the players want a queen, then black will be first to buy it.

But perhaps another combination of pieces would work better:

Pawn = 25

Knight = 75

Bisshop = 83

Rook = 113

Queen = 219

Here's the game played a bit further.

Black bought a queen in turn 24. White responds in turn 26 with a different set of pieces. Black to move:

hey just wondering does your board have different colors? the brown and bright blue combination throws me off, I couldnt play well on a board like that

Also its hard to play with black. Because at this time there is no 'flip board' option :( Being able to customize the board would indeed also be userfriendly.

I analyzed this position with Houdini and it says: DRAW :D

With these moves

27. Bd5xf3 g2xf3 28. Ra8-a7 Rc3-c8 29. Qd8-b6 Rc8-c6 30. Qb6-d8 Rc6-c8 31. Qd8-b6

Black would have a slightly stronger economy, but white was far from hopeless. This game would have took another 30-50 moves to finish.. but not in a draw!
