If chess players are so smart why they are not millionaires/billionaires?

Money doesnt = Intelligence and neither does intelligence = school success but intelligence can contribute to these things

(TheGreatOogieBoogie) In America the big problems started when people on boats came over centuries ago, drew boundaries around land and said, "this is mine".

And so the old indian, with shovel in hand, said "White man you can have all the land you think you need by running in a great, big square. You have from sunrise to sunset....I'll wait here". He did so. He made a huge square marking it with sticks. Just before sunset here he comes. Sweating, out of breath, completely worn out. As he reaches the old indian he collapses and dies. The old indian took his shovel and began digging a six-foot deep hole....just what the man really needed....Wink....

Anatoly Karpov was the world's first chess millionaire.

Then, after that, every World champion sinse. As well as Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer (resulting from their 92 match in Serbia.)

Often.

Let us trade, then!

You give me all your money. I'll give you all my happiness!

Deal?

chess does not determine intelligence

I am sure many of world's millionaires/billionaires, enjoy playing chess. They just don't have the time to dedicate to it. They are too busy with business and probably a break from anything mentally taxing, that could some way be stressful, as chess can be.

Adversely, chess players who are dedicated to learning every nuance they can, don't spend the kind of time it requires to oversee making millions/billions of dollars.

I think maybe the last few of the world champions may have made enough money to be considered millionaires, at least at one point in their lives, if they still aren't.

If any of the very intelligent chess players managed to make a time machine to alleviate this problem, chess and making money would generally become after thoughts for them, in my opinion, at least for a while any way.

If i were you i would take back the opinion that some GM's are not millionaires, lol truth is some are indeed millionaires like Kasparov, Anand,  Carlsen....these GM's are somewhat like a super human to me in such cases that i wonder their moves are very mysterious and logical!.I play chess over web and understand that defeating a best player is very tough. These GM's are stood out of best players.

Rich people don't look sad in public. They are too busy and it's bad for PR. I do know they are always under stress. Most poor people carry a smile except when hungry :( Poor chess masters are a different breed of poor people. They felt so happy when they find a beautiful combination on the board. Ask Tal :)

(Enthusiast14) mysterious and logical!

Yes, my love....their moves are mysterious, but 2,3,4 moves later they become so logical ! I think it's somewhat like money in that mystery surrounds those with tons of it but it seems so logical to want lots too....don't you think ?....Smile.....

People have basic needs and if these are provided for, they can be happy.Unfortunately, most people are not content with what they have or they do not know that they have enough to make them happy.

There are several factors that contribute to a man being rich not just talent. Luck is one of them. Look at the several actors that ply the streets of Hollywood, only a few of them will have a break in being included in a cast for  a TV show or movie that will be a hit and then instant success for them.  Luck is often described as being in the right place at the right time. Like for example being in the USA in 1979 when computer programmers where in big demand. Or in 2008 in the USA where there was a financial crisis, one is already at a retirement age but was offered an early retirement package when one's company one is working for was bought by another company.

Not really rich but have enough money to be able to afford to visit and stay in the Philippines three or six months a year and the rest of the year live in the USA. Even before Phil was Dr. Phil, not to offend the guy, I have a diet of several self-improvement books.

The_Ghostess_Lola

Ahhh, where were we ? Yes, money buys you convenience (amongst many other things), and convenience is the dominant subset of happiness....Smile....

The_Ghostess_Lola

Ahh, but this may be a mistake....wouldn't you think ?....Smile....

i knew a Gm back in the eighties, a redneck from the woods in virgunia, he used to sell Christmas trees during the holidays, nicest guy in the world, worked as a foot messenger in the worst of weather, never had two nickles to rub together, but you could always count on him for good weed and good companionship, he didnt look down o lesser players like so many chess.com poofs do.

It's all about finding contentment in what you do and who you are. I'll never be a millionaire, and don't care to be. I find myself being able to devote more time to chess and other activities. I realize that I'll probaly not be much better than a club player, but nobody loves the game more. I'll take a small comfortable life, fishing and playing chess, to worrying about moneyand what other people think.
