If the king is so important, why did they only make him move one square any direction?

I posted this earlier, and someone mis-read, thinking that I said it's impossible for black to win that position in normal chess. Come on--I would never say that! Surprised Even a monkey can win that! I'll emphasize that my point was this: If the king were given the powers of a queen, then it would be impossible for black to win--which is why it makes no sense for the king to have such powers.

...it has 2 be cornered, squared, walled, 'n even runned ...w/out a  fight...i'ts alright, Ma!, i'm only checkmated!Yell...

The king is infinitely important and must be kept out of harm's way, he cannot be allowed to roam the board so only one square to move.

President Obama doesn't scout North Korea in Air Force One, so you get the idea.

Beside if the king has super-powers, it could mean the end to castling. And then I won't here that satisfying castling sound in live chess anymore!

The raw power of the King is not that small. If you replace your Bishops in the starting position with non-royal Kings, the game should be fairy even.

Knightmate (a variant where the King is replaced by a royal Knight, and Knights are replaced by the non-royal Kings) is a playable variant, too.

chessbot7

because they want to make chess difficult...

If the king can move like a queen they are in check. Read the thread.

PureTheLion

*turning around and becoming enraged*, DID I SAY THAT THE KING HAD QUEEN POWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kkchess9960

If the king could move like the queen, checkmate would be nearly impossible.

How is that position a checkmate if the king has queen powers? You'll have to clarify a little more...how is that a mate?

OrangeJ

I meant black to move

When was the last time you saw a really hard working boss? ;)

They call the lion the King of the Jungle, but it's the lionesses that do the hunting...

yes u can checkmate LOL

David_Spencer

I think the least material for mate where Black has no pieces is two pawns and a Bishop by # of piece count and four pawns for point count

. Of course, if Black has pieces any amount of material would suffice.
