...it has 2 be cornered, squared, walled, 'n even runned ...w/out a fight...i'ts alright, Ma!, i'm only checkmated!...
If the king is so important, why did they only make him move one square any direction?

The king is infinitely important and must be kept out of harm's way, he cannot be allowed to roam the board so only one square to move.
President Obama doesn't scout North Korea in Air Force One, so you get the idea.
Beside if the king has super-powers, it could mean the end to castling. And then I won't here that satisfying castling sound in live chess anymore!

The raw power of the King is not that small. If you replace your Bishops in the starting position with non-royal Kings, the game should be fairy even.
Knightmate (a variant where the King is replaced by a royal Knight, and Knights are replaced by the non-royal Kings) is a playable variant, too.

Like so many of us, his powers have been usurped by the bitch that lives with him.
I've never laughed so hard in my life....

It would be fun to figure out the mating position where the attacking side needs the least material...
Can anybody beat this?
Ooh, I can!
yes you can! in my example, the kings ARE NOT IN CHECK, even though other plaers say so. ask ANY admin!
Because he is not Alexander the great, he is some fat King who sits in the back and commands.
Exactly my thoughts.

The king is important, but if you give him too much power, it becomes nearly impossible to checkmate him. In pretty much all endgames, checkmate is impossible. For example, try this:
Black is up by a whole queen, but there's absolutely no way black can even hope to come close to checkmate!
I posted this earlier, and someone mis-read, thinking that I said it's impossible for black to win that position in normal chess. Come on--I would never say that! Even a monkey can win that! I'll emphasize that my point was this: If the king were given the powers of a queen, then it would be impossible for black to win--which is why it makes no sense for the king to have such powers.
even if the king has q powers although this is not forced is checkmate
even if the king has q powers although this is not forced is checkmate
How is that position a checkmate if the king has queen powers? You'll have to clarify a little more...how is that a mate?
importance vs ability/power
