King, any of the other pieces can be sacrificed with benefit.

you guys must love all-out attacks!  i'll be the horsey any day, love those smothered mates!

Queen because it's the most powerful piece, although I'd draw the line at having to undergo a sex change operation in order to become a Queen.

I'd be a bishop because it guarentees a place in heaven. Although I would suffer during this mortal life from moving only in diagonal lines and constantly searching for h7 squares in order to sacrifice myself for the greater good. THE GREATER GOOD... 

I would be the King, obvious reasons : )

Tired of being a queen?

Of all the chess pieces to be, I would be the pawn in promotion. 

Here's why:

Having traversed the board and pushed on through passed all the ranks, I've already fulfilled my intended purpose successfully, so thanks.

Now, after pawn-life, the real fun begins...

 I can still remember what it's like to be only a pawn, but never will I be a pawn again!

And I have some attractive upgrade options for my new glorified body...B,R,Q,K

I would want to be the king so I get to play for the whole game.

The Best, The Laziest....all the same to me : )

The whole reason of the game...is the King..makes the whole debate go to the bing..Who is lion hearted like a king? Knowing the two propable ends of  the non ending(!) game..End can be won or lost..Let us say, that he got one of the ends...The Others of the Island can't know, for him what the end did cost? The fear of the past, and the anxiety of the future makes people choose all the pieces leaving the King way out...Don't look at the King standing there passive(even when his time comes for the move)...He the one who wins and loses when one of the people of him wins and loses..He the one who feels..The whole game is for him..Who wants to be an eye or hand, when there is a choice like using the soul and body both..For the King, Cheers! (I can't believe I'm saying these words, a box full of fears 8O...Let us make a new beginning hence let's live the present tense with a 100% consciousness..

As the Kings of our desired reputations allow. And a warm Salute to my Nephew (above, nice writing skills), Cheers with no fears : )))
