i would also combine queen and knight. however, i might even try to combine bishop and knight and replace bishops with these combined pieces.

I'm a programmer, and a while back, I messed around a bit with a chess+ game with some "enhancements" to regular chess, and one of them was that the Queen could also move in L shapes like Knights. Another was for pawns to also move laterally (though they still could only capture diagonally and move 1 step at a time).
The bishop and the other bishop, so you could move to any colored square, but only diagonally.
Queen and Knight, which is called an "Amazon".
I'd usually make a queen and a knight, but I'll be original and say a bishop with a knight :D

On second thought, how about Pawn and Queen? This adds nothing to the Queen's power, but one does gain 8 additional Queens!
