What you all seem to be forgetting is that the English Language (and therefore it's dictionaries) are directed by useage, rather than vice-versa... the dictionaries are the ones catching up with those speaking the language. Therefore, us using the word strategically in a non-military sense is more correct than what the dictionary tells us.

yes its a military one.

Think of a chess game as a war. Your strategy may be to attack on the left, the right, or in the center. In that case your strategy is your military (chess) plan of action. Suppose your strategy is to attack the enemy king wherever it is. Your pieces are placed strategically if they are helping in the attack. If they are not helping in the attack then they are not placed strategically.

I think he's an askin' kind of guy, not an answerin' type.

The reason I don't agree is clear in post 123.  The definition for strategy has absolutely nothing to do with the military.

I understand. I just figured if kurogkog couldn't change his point of view then it might be better to work in terms he understands.

Yay!!

The word strategy has its roots in war and and is still used as a military term but it is not limited to this, 'Kurokug' only quoted a small part of that dictionary's definition.  "2 a: a careful plan or method : a clever stratagem b: the art of devising or employing plans or stratagems toward a goal" this is out of the same mirriam-webster dictionary. Kurokug's quotation was the first definition.  This same dictionary shows you that the word does not have to be used in relation to the military or competition

However, if, for example, you were discussing a poem and the connotations that come with the use of the word strategy you would likely come to the conclusion that the author had intended to use military imagery, even if the subject matter had nothing to do with this

I wonder about that myself but, if so, it's certainly a unique style.

Careful, this may involve the military. Boot camp is famous for helping shed those unwanted pounds.
