If you would give any advice about chess to a beginner, what would it be?

I would personally tell them to keep on trying and to never give up because there is always something you can improve on.

General advice: Do more tactics, and enjoy the game. More specific advice (for someone that wants to get good): Get the Soviet Chess Primer, and finish that book. After that get the Yusupov books, and do them the way the author intended you do to them. And play longer games (at least 30+0)

Depends.

They may not need any advice at all, if for example they already have a coach.

Or they may need everything explained.
