If You're A Chess Player, You're Probably Smarter Than Others. Is this, TRUE?

Chess is pretty sweet TBH.  I've taught all of my children and others the game and they all still play.   To become smug from being a chess player is just stupid.

This is cognitive bias. You're assuming that chess is a board game that only intelligent people engage with in the first place.

This is patently false. People like xQc exist. While having a higher IQ means you would be better at chess at a higher chance, it doesn't mean that you ARE intelligent or have a high IQ. Perhaps you just enjoy board games.

This concept is so stupid and it's one of the reasons more people dont play chess. The extreme lack of self-esteem and reliance on intellectual superiority and exclusivity is stupid and it should stop

PlayByDay

Smart people play chess and rich people play golf. Unfortunately, playing both neither proves that you're rich and smart nor does it make you richer and smarter.

But yes it's true, they did not like it for what reason? The shape of the pieces? The colour of the squares? I bet you don't compete OTB, nah. And if you claim you do, you're a liar.

Pretty sure you are a troll by now so I am not wasting time with this.

Lmao you got nothing else to respond with huh ?

Smart people are certainly doing other things than playing chess.

I agree. If most of the high rated chessplayer were that smart, they would get a real business.

zes0460

Actually I am respecting the guy by calling him a troll. I can't believe a guy really, seriously thinks that people who don't like chess are not as intelligent as people who like it or that people who don't like chess are somehow less competitive than people who like it which is what the guy is implying.

Therefore i am giving him the benefit of the doubt here by calling him a troll

Chess requires planning, learning, thinking, analyzing. It is more likely to appeal to people of a more intellectual bent, so a greater % of those who enjoy the game and become somewhat competent probably have a decent IQ. So, the average IQ among chess players is very likely somewhat higher than the average IQ among the general population.

This does not mean that being a chess player proves you are highly intelligent. It definitely does not mean that being a top-level player indicates high IQ. Lots of factors besides IQ make up chess talent.

If I asked someone with incredibly low intelligence to play a game of chess (for example, they start yelling, “why doesn’t the horsey run around, huh!?”), that wouldn’t make them more intelligent.

Literally any sport or activity where there is competition requires learning, planning, thinking, analyzing. Chess is no different than any other activity.

sndeww

brianchesscake

Einstein said that chess is a waste of time.

Yes, but that's about all there is to chess. No exercise, speed, strength, agility. It's only appeal is to the intellect.

IFuzzyWuzzy

Hikaru Nakamura once mentioned knowing a scientist involved with string theory. His chess rating however was only around 1600.

snoozyman

If you play chess, chances are you are smarter than animals, such as dogs, cows, and bears. If you lose to chess against an animal, chances are you are not smart, especially if you get eaten by the animal by approaching it with the chessboard.

IFuzzyWuzzy

The bear is offended! Would never eat another chess player. :-)

chess has no relationship with intellect

mechmachan

First of all. Define smart.

If you mean intelligence, then what type of intelligence? Emotional, mathematical, reasoning, spatial or something else??

I hope you get where I am going...

Chess is one way to appear smart. Its not the only way. There are 1000 other ways.

You are free to choose.
