Probably not. Imagine what Kasparov, Carlsen and Nakamura could have achieved for humanity if they wouldn't have wasted their time on a game in which they can be beaten by a computer anyway. It is - of course - an entertaining lifestyle, but these guys would probably have gotten away with a lot less practice in other fields of work.

Intelligence is also difficult to define. Some say it is the ability to recognize, compare, develope and modify patterns. This leaves out the so called "crystalline intelligence". This refers to memory. With a brilliant memory, you can simply learn things faster, because you need less repetitions. Furthermore, memory seems to be more consistent with age. This is why people with Alzheimers can still play a guitar up to some point, despite their overall "adaptive pattern intelligence" rapidly decreasing in comparison with the "crystalline intelligence".

Playing a game has no correlation to the intelligence of the individual, but rather their social status. This is why you find so many rich people playing polo or golf.

You can set a child in front of a chess board and play chess with them. The only rule you can derive from them playing chess is not that they are very intelligent, but just intelligent enough to play it. Chess is requiring a certain "entrance level" intelligence.

High level chess however is a different thing. One thing you can say for sure is that top level players are very likely to have an excellent memory or "crystalline intelligence". Especially Blitz players like Nakamura rely heavily on pattern recognition to play certain moves very, very fast. Besides that, they have to calculate certain positions and options pretty fast. This can be referred to as adaptive intelligence, but the correlation is questionable, because these calculations can also be unconsciously supported by training and therefore memory of similar calculations.

To conclude: Once people have reached certain thresholds of rating in the chess community it is safe to assume that they at least have a decent memory which can indicate better performance in other fields of work, requiring mental gymnastics. However, overall, chess players cannot be considered more intelligent.
